Patriots Rule Out Christian Gonzalez and Christian Barmore for Bills Showdown

New England faces Josh Allen and the Bills without its two highest-paid defensive stars, as Christian Gonzalez and Christian Barmore are inactive for Sunday’s Week 4 AFC East clash in Buffalo.

The inactive sheet landed 90 minutes before kickoff, and the two names at the top of New England's list needed no explanation. Cornerback Christian Gonzalez and defensive tackle Christian Barmore are both out for Sunday's Week 4 AFC East showdown against the Bills — the first missed game of the 2026 season for each, and two of the biggest defensive absences any team in the NFL is dealing with in the early going.

Head coach Mike Vrabel ruled both defenders out on Friday with shoulder injuries, and neither player practiced at all during the week, according to the team's final injury report. The Patriots (1-2) walk into the new Highmark Stadium in Buffalo for a 1 p.m. ET kickoff with their highest-paid defender and their most talented interior rusher both in street clothes, facing a Bills offense led by Josh Allen and running back James Cook that has made a habit of exposing exactly these kinds of weaknesses.

A $33.75 million hole at corner

Gonzalez, 24, is the player the Patriots built this defense around financially. The extension he signed this offseason averages $33.75 million per year — the most annual compensation of any cornerback in the NFL — and he has played like the investment through three games, with five pass deflections and the kind of elite coverage numbers that show up on tape long before they show up on a stat sheet. He has shadowed No. 1 receivers since the opener. Against Allen, that job does not exist in a vacuum.

With Gonzalez out, the Patriots' corner rotation falls to veteran Charles Woods and rookie Karon Prunty, per the game-day inactives list published by Pats Pulpit (SB Nation). That is a massive ask on the road against an offense designed to find the weak link. New England's defensive staff has shown trust in both players in spot duty this season, but there is a difference between spot duty and a full AFC East afternoon in Buffalo, with Allen testing every leverage rep the moment the ball is snapped.

Barmore and a run defense searching for answers

If the Gonzalez loss is about the passing game, the Barmore loss is about everything up front. The defensive tackle played a full season in 2025 after being limited to just four games in 2024, and his return was supposed to anchor the interior this year. Instead, his snap share has dipped to 52% in the early going, and the Patriots defense ranks 17th against the run — a mediocre number for a unit that expected to be better with Barmore healthy.

Now he misses a game entirely, and the timing could not be worse. James Cook has been the engine of Buffalo's ground game, and the Patriots have to defend him with a thinner rotation inside. There is at least one piece of good news on the defensive front: edge rusher Dre'Mont Jones is active after missing the last two games, giving Vrabel a proven pass-rusher off the edge to pair with what is left of the interior, per Patriots Wire (USA Today).

The rest of the Patriots sheet

Beyond the two headliners, New England's inactives are cornerback Channing Canada, offensive lineman Dametrious Crownover, tight end Tanner Arkin, and quarterback Behren Morton. The Canada absence thins the corner group even further, meaning Woods and Prunty will play heavy snaps with very little margin behind them.

The active list carries some relief, per the Providence Journal's game-day updates: safety Craig Woodson, edge rusher Dre'Mont Jones, and offensive tackle Morgan Moses are all cleared, and tight end Eli Raridon is active despite a thigh injury, giving Hunter Henry a backup in two-tight-end packages.

The offensive line remains a moving target. Walter Rouse and Ben Brown will split right guard after Greg Van Roten — who was himself filling in for the injured Mike Onwenu — went down. Alijah Vera-Tucker stays put at left guard, so the Patriots at least have continuity on one side of the interior while the right side holds auditions in the middle of a divisional road game.

Still without A.J. Brown

New England is also still without wide receiver A.J. Brown, who remains on injured reserve. The offense has managed without its top pass-catcher for three weeks, but losing him for a fourth game matters more in a matchup where the defense is compromised — if the Patriots cannot slow Allen and Cook, the margin for the offense shrinks, and doing it without Brown shrinks it further. Rookie quarterback Behren Morton is inactive as well, but that changes nothing about the game plan; this is about depth, not the quarterback room.

Buffalo isn't whole either

The Bills have their own significant cornerback problem. Christian Benford is inactive with a toe injury after missing practice all week, which means Buffalo will start rookie Davison Igbinosun opposite Maxwell Hairston at corner, per NBC Sports' Week 4 inactives roundup. The Patriots' receiving corps is short on star power without Brown, but any rookie corner on the field in a division game is an invitation, and New England will test Igbinosun early.

Buffalo's remaining inactives are wide receiver Skyler Bell, safety Jalon Kilgore, edge rusher Mike Danna, offensive linemen Ar'maj Reed-Adams and Jude Bowry, and defensive lineman T.J. Sanders. It is a longer list than New England's, but it lacks the concentration of impact at the top: the Patriots are missing their best cover corner and their best interior disruptor in the same game.

What this game is

Strip away the injury report and this is what Week 4 of an AFC East season is supposed to feel like: the Patriots traveling to the new Highmark Stadium, in Buffalo, to face a Bills team that has owned this matchup in recent years. Allen against a shorthanded secondary. Cook against a run defense that ranks 17th and is down its best tackle. Two rookie corners — one on each side — with the league watching to see which one gets targeted first.

Gonzalez and Barmore were ruled out Friday, which means the Patriots have known for two days this was coming and game-planned for it. But there is knowing a thing and there is living with it, and living with it means Charles Woods and Karon Prunty playing the most important snaps of their seasons against the best quarterback in the division. Vrabel's defense has to solve that problem without the $33.75 million answer. Ninety minutes from kickoff, the inactive sheet said everything it needed to say.
