FC Porto beat Napoli 4–1 at the Estádio do Dragão on Champions League Matchday 4 (Wed 4 Nov 2026) — a scoreline that lies about how long this game was alive. It was 1–1 in the 71st minute, the result genuinely in doubt. Twenty minutes later Porto had scored three more times, and a side that had lost every European game it had played this season had its first Champions League win.
Porto, perfect domestically under Francesco Farioli but beaten in all three of their league-phase games — by Manchester City, Real Betis and PSV — started like a side that knew what was at stake. Pepê had a finish ruled offside inside four minutes and Borja Sainz skimmed the crossbar, and on 11 minutes the pressure told from a set play Napoli never got to grips with all night: Gabri Veiga's corner found Jan Bednarek totally free, and the centre-back headed in from nine yards.
Napoli, missing a long injury list and with Rasmus Højlund back from flu, refused to fold. Kevin De Bruyne had a finish ruled offside, Veiga clipped the side-netting with a free kick at the other end, and two minutes before half-time the equaliser came out of a scramble: Diogo Costa made two big reaction saves, first from Matteo Politano's strike and then from Højlund's follow-up, but Scott McTominay forced in the third attempt on 43 minutes. Level at the break, Napoli had something to hold. They held it for 26 more minutes.
The second half was Porto's pressure building until it broke. Bednarek headed another Veiga corner off the top of the crossbar; Veiga thumped the crossbar himself from the edge of the area; Santiago Giménez scuffed a good chance at Alex Meret. Napoli's set-play marking had already been warned, and the Dragão crowd could feel the goal coming. On 71 minutes it arrived in open play: Giménez picked the right pass, Veiga ran through, and the Spaniard beat the onrushing Meret one-on-one.
It was the goal of a complete performance. Veiga had made the opener from the corner flag, hit the woodwork himself and tormented Napoli between the lines all night; UEFA named him Player of the Match, and by the time he was done the contest had tipped into a rout.
Nine minutes later it was 3–1, from the same failure as the first goal: Jakub Kiwior, the former Arsenal defender, rose for another totally free header from a corner, Hwang In-beom the provider (80'). Both of Porto's centre-backs had scored with their heads. It got worse for Napoli at the end — Samu Aghehowa was brought down on the counter with no attempt to play the ball, Rafa Marín was sent off (89'), and Samu converted the penalty himself in the 90th minute.
The win is Porto's first of this league phase after three straight defeats. Napoli stay on three points, their campaign hanging by a thread, and their manager Massimiliano Allegri admitted afterwards that the mistakes on set plays are the kind that cost matches at this level — his side conceded twice from corners, both times to a free header, on a night the game was there for them for more than an hour.
