Real Salt Lake 2, LA Galaxy 1 at America First Field — Sergi Solans and Zach Booth scored three minutes apart, the Galaxy's only reply was an own goal, and Salt Lake held on through Decision Day to take the playoff spot both teams came for.

Real Salt Lake beat the LA Galaxy 2-1 at America First Field in Sandy on Saturday, November 7, 2026 — MLS Decision Day, the final day of the regular season — in a game both teams entered chasing the same playoff berth. USA TODAY's Decision Day account called it "functionally a direct play-in": every Galaxy clinching scenario started with a win in Utah. The Galaxy were 2-0 down inside 13 minutes, and the win they needed never came back into reach.

Salt Lake settled it almost before the Galaxy could. At 10', Noel Caliskan slipped a through ball in behind the back line and Sergi Solans finished right-footed from the centre of the box, low into the bottom corner. Three minutes later the Galaxy failed to clear a corner, and Zach Booth drove Salt Lake's second in from the left side of the box. The home side had both goals — and, as it turned out, the game's whole margin — inside the first quarter-hour.

The Galaxy's reply was not one of their own finishes. At 40', Hirving Lozano's cross took a deflection off Luc de Fougerolles — the Salt Lake defender putting the ball through his own net — and it was 2-1 at half-time. The Galaxy's official account marked the moment the same way: "Chucky's cross takes a deflection in our favor," its reel of the play captioned "CHUCKY FORCES AN OWN GOAL." De Fougerolles was booked at 55', on a night that kept finding him.

There were no goals after the break. Salt Lake managed the closing stretch out — DeAndre Yedlin and Justen Glad came on before the hour, Ariath Piol for the final 20 minutes — while the Galaxy's changes, Erik Thommy and Robert Taylor at 62' and Kyogo Furuhashi at 83', never produced an equaliser. Solans was booked at 77', Kobi Henry and Juan Manuel Sanabria had gone into the book in the first half, and at 90'+5' the whistle closed a 2-1 Salt Lake win. The club's own full-time posts said what it carried: "THREE POINTS IN THE BAG," then "it's decided — WE CLINCHED PLAYOFFS."

The Play-In Was Over in Thirteen Minutes

A play-in game is supposed to be tight. This one was decided by a three-minute burst a quarter of an hour in — and the second half produced bookings and substitutions, but no second Galaxy goal and no real scare: Salt Lake saw the game out at the pace they chose.

Everything after that burst was administration — the Galaxy, for all their changes, never built a second moment to match the one that had been handed to them.

Previously Staff’s read: The result settled the West's last playoff places between the two teams on the field. Salt Lake finish ninth in the Western Conference on 45 points, and their reward is immediate: a winner-take-all Wild Card game away to the Seattle Sounders on Thursday, November 19 — the Sounders' own official recap confirms Seattle finish eighth and host ninth-place Real Salt Lake. The club billed the run as the longest active playoff streak in the Western Conference. The Galaxy finish 11th on 44 points and are eliminated from MLS Cup Playoff contention: a season that came down to one night in Utah was effectively over in 13 minutes, and their only goal of the night was scored by a Salt Lake player.
