DALLAS
Every October, the Cotton Bowl becomes the one building in America where a team's season can go to ruin by sundown. Today's edition of the Allstate Red River Rivalry — the 122nd meeting between the No. 1 Texas Longhorns and Oklahoma — carries the heaviest stakes this game has seen in years: an undefeated Texas team trying to keep a season of destiny alive, and a 2-2 Oklahoma team that knows a loss ends its season in every way that matters. Kickoff is 2:30 p.m. CT (12:30 p.m. PT) on ABC.
On paper, this shouldn't be close. Texas is a 7.5-point favorite, per BetMGM odds via The Oklahoman, and Oklahoma arrives with one of the worst offenses in college football. But "on paper" has never meant much in this building. Since 2020, the lower-ranked team has won this game three times, per the Daily Texan — and a year ago, the roles were exactly reversed, with undefeated No. 6 Oklahoma walking in as the favorite and unranked, two-loss Texas walking out with the Golden Hat.
Older than the state itself
The rivalry started in 1900 — Oklahoma wasn't even a state yet; it joined the union in 1907 — and it has been played at the State Fair of Texas in Dallas since 1929. This is the 97th consecutive meeting at the Fair, per News9, and the schools have a contract with the City of Dallas keeping the game at the Cotton Bowl through at least 2036, per Longhorn Wire. Steve Sarkisian put it plainly at his Monday press availability: "I love all that comes with this game. I love that it's at the state fair [of Texas], the smell of the corn dogs and funnel cakes. It's special and unique and I don't take it lightly. I wouldn't change it for anything, and I think it being at the old Cotton Bowl is very special," per 247Sports.
Brent Venables agrees with his rival on at least this: "I love everything about it: the passion, the energy, the intensity, the crowd being 50-50. I think it's fantastic," he said, per the Daily Texan. The 50-50 part is literal — each team gets half the seats, split down the 50-yard line, the only neutral-site game in the country with that seating configuration, per Longhorn Wire. Oklahoma occupies the south end zone, which holds the only tunnel both teams use to enter and exit. OU is the designated home team this year (even years, per Longhorn Wire), and Texas will wear its Icy White uniforms, per Longhorn Wire.

The stakes are not symmetrical
Texas is 4-0 and 1-0 in the SEC, sitting No. 1 in the latest AP Top 25 (released Sunday) with 61 of 70 first-place votes, per our AP Top 25 story. The Longhorns' résumé is already elite: a 59-7 opening rout of Texas State, a dramatic 24-23 win over then-No. 1 Ohio State, a home win over UTSA, and a 20-17 road escape at Tennessee, per Sportradar box scores. The defense is allowing just 13.3 points per game, 11th nationally, per Bleacher Nation. With the College Football Playoff selection committee not releasing its first rankings until November 3, every Saturday between now and then is an audition — and a loss to an unranked rival would be a stain that doesn't wash out.
Oklahoma, meanwhile, is 2-2 and unranked — and the Sooners' margin for error is already gone. Their offense has been a mess: minus-6 in turnover margin, which ranks 136th out of 138 teams, per Sports Illustrated. They lost at Michigan despite holding the Wolverines to 263 total yards, and they were picked apart at Georgia, turning it over four times, including a fumble that Chris Cole returned 85 yards for a touchdown, per Pro Football Network. Venables's group is the rare team whose defense is championship-caliber and whose offense looks like it left something in the locker room.
And yet. Sarkisian spent the week warning his own locker room about exactly this setup. "We were in the same situation a year ago. We were just coming off losing to Florida. We were a two-loss team. We were a desperate football team and found a way to win and played a really good second half," he said, per Sports Illustrated. In 2025, Texas was the desperate 3-2 team coming off a 29-21 loss to Florida, and Oklahoma was the undefeated No. 6 with a Heisman-contending quarterback — and Texas won 23-6 anyway, per EssentiallySports. The coach remembers who he was in this movie. He just doesn't want his team to become the other side of it.
The quarterbacks will decide it
The Oklahoman's Jenni Carlson framed the Brent Venables era of this rivalry bluntly: the team with the best quarterback wins. Under Venables, the Sooners are 0-3 against Texas when they have the quarterback deficit. Which makes today's matchup the most interesting part of the game.
Texas senior Arch Manning — the former No. 1 prospect in the class of 2023 who backed up Quinn Ewers for two seasons before taking over in 2025 — has been good enough to be undefeated and uneven enough to be questioned: 73-of-115 (63.5%) for 862 yards, 7 touchdowns and 3 interceptions through four games, per Heavy. The wins are real — the Ohio State thriller, the road escape at Tennessee. The questions are just as real. One NFL draft analyst left Manning out of the first round entirely in his latest 2027 mock draft, per Heavy, and prominent QB coach Quincy Avery posted on X that "nothing says first round other than his name," per Pro Football Network. Manning gets the ball off in time today, or the doubts follow him into the bye week.
Oklahoma's John Mateer, meanwhile, is playing for his season. Through four games he has 886 passing yards, 8 touchdowns, 4 interceptions and 2 fumbles lost, completing 66.1% of his passes, per Sooners Wire — but the most damning stat is on the ground: 76 rushing yards on 1.9 yards per carry with zero scores. The previous two seasons combined, he ran for 1,257 yards and 23 touchdowns, per Sooners Wire. His legs have vanished, and with them, Oklahoma's offense.
Venables confirmed Wednesday that Mateer remains the starter: "John's our starting quarterback. John is as tough as they come… He's the same guy. How he works, how he competes, how he leads, how he responds," per AtoZ Sports. Mateer, for his part, sounds like a man who knows what this game means. "It's the game; it is what everybody says it is. It's awesome, and I'm honored to play in it," he said via OU Insider, per Sooners Wire. He also knows last year — 17 days removed from thumb surgery, a game-time decision, three interceptions, and the Sooners held out of the end zone, per the Oklahoman. Redemption is on the table, if his arm can find it.
The Golden Hat
The prize is the best-known trophy in college football: a gold ten-gallon cowboy hat mounted on a block of wood, awarded on the field at the end of the game, per Wikipedia. It was created in 1941 as the "Bronze Hat" — actually bronze — and donated by the State Fair of Texas as thanks for the schools bringing their rivalry to Dallas, per the Daily Texan (via Wikipedia). It was reworked in the 1970s, came out gold, and the name changed with the metal. Texas currently holds it, and the last two years show why: a 34-3 demolition in 2024 when the Longhorns were No. 1 and the Sooners No. 18, and a 23-6 win last year in which Oklahoma never found the end zone, per NCAA.com and the Daily Texan.
The longer arc tells the real story of this rivalry's chaos. Texas's 49-0 win in 2022 was its biggest over the Sooners since 1941 and the first shutout in the rivalry since 1965, per the Daily Texan. Oklahoma answered in 2023 with a 75-yard game-winning touchdown drive, taking the Golden Hat 34-30 with 15 seconds left, per the Daily Texan — Dillon Gabriel throwing for 285 yards and adding 113 on the ground, per the Beacon Journal. Texas leads the all-time series 65-51-5, per Longhorn Wire, and the programs have combined for 11 national championships. One stat, per Longhorn Wire, defines the stakes better than any poll: the loser of this game has never gone on to win the national title.
What actually decides it
The trenches, the flags, and the turnovers. Oklahoma's defense is fifth in the country in EPA allowed per rush, per the Oklahoman — a genuine wall. But Texas's offense ranks 102nd nationally in EPA per rush, per the Oklahoman, and the Longhorns committed 19 penalties across their last two games. That's the matchup the coaches will lie about and the coordinators will obsess over: Venables's front against a Texas run game that hasn't been good, with Mateer's turnovers deciding whether Oklahoma can capitalize.
Both sidelines are banged up. Oklahoma lists linebacker Taylor Heim, receiver Trell Harris, running back Xavier Robinson, defensive back Jacobe Johnson and offensive lineman Fred Hinton as out, with tight end Trynae Washington and lineman Michael Fasusi doubtful. Texas is without receiver Kaliq Lockett, lineman Jordan Coleman and lineman Zion Williams, with lineman Justus Terry questionable, per the SEC availability reports published by News9. Texas pass rusher Colin Simmons — the guy OU's patchwork line has to account for on every snap — leads a defense that has carried the Longhorns all month, per News9. Oklahoma offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle's unit, per Sports Illustrated, used the bye week to reset. It needs to look like it.
Texas senior linebacker Justin Cryer isn't buying the records. "This is a game they're going to show up for," he told the Houston Chronicle, per Pro Football Network. "We have to be on it, or it's going to be a long day for us." That's not coach-speak. That's the only honest sentence anyone has said about this game all week.
The number
Texas -7.5, total 39.5, moneyline Texas -325 / Oklahoma +260 — those are the BetMGM numbers as of Friday, per the Oklahoman. That 39.5 is the lowest total on the ranked board today, and the market is telling you what it expects: a street fight. The Oklahoman's Colton Sulley picked the upset anyway: Oklahoma 20, Texas 17, leaning on the Sooners' rush defense matching up against a Texas offense that, per his read, "hasn't been spectacular." Our full Saturday watch guide is on the under. The rest of the day's slate — including No. 2 Georgia at No. 6 Alabama — is in our Friday notebook.
Saturday, Oct. 10, 2026 — 2:30 p.m. CT / 12:30 p.m. PT, ABC (Sean McDonough, Greg McElroy, Katie George). No. 1 Texas (4-0, 1-0 SEC); Oklahoma (2-2, 0-1 SEC), unranked — AP Top 25 released Oct. 4. CFP selection committee's first rankings arrive Nov. 3 — this is an audition, not a coronation.
