Rexhep Rexhepi won the Aiguille d'Or tonight in Geneva. GPHG's official prize list for the 2026 Grand Prix d'Horlogerie de Genève puts his Chronograph Flyback — the RRCHF — at the top of the entire year in watchmaking, ahead of every maison that walked into the ceremony with a bigger name, a bigger marketing budget and a bigger building.
That is the whole story in one line, and it still undersells it. Rexhepi runs an independent atelier in Geneva's old town. Monochrome reported that his total production runs to around 50 watches a year, and his watches move by allocation, not off a shelf. The Aiguille d'Or is the one prize at the GPHG that is not a category — it is best in show, picked from the whole field — and this year it belongs to the smallest serious workshop in the room.
Hodinkee reported that the ceremony was the first under new GPHG jury president Wei Koh and ran mostly in English for the first time. The giants did not leave empty-handed: GPHG's prize list shows the Special Jury Prize going to Patek Philippe for its Watch Art Grand Exhibition, and the separate Chronograph Watch Prize going to Parmigiani Fleurier for the Tonda PF Chronographe Mystérieux. Read that again, because it is the detail that makes the night. A Rexhepi chronograph did not win the chronograph prize. It won everything.
The watch that won it
The RRCHF is Rexhepi's first flyback chronograph, and he did not borrow a calibre to build it. Monochrome reported that the movement was developed entirely from the ground up in-house — an integrated, hand-wound flyback built around a horizontal clutch and a column wheel, laid out with the strict symmetrical architecture that has become his signature. Revolution reported the calibre carries 320 components and 72 hours of power reserve, and still lands in a 38.8mm case just 9.7mm thick.
The dial explains itself the second you look at it. The hours and minutes sit off-centre, up at 12 o'clock, so the chronograph owns the middle of the watch — one long central seconds hand running the full diameter. Watchonista reported that all three counters are cut from grey-tinted fumé sapphire, so the movement ghosts through the sub-dials instead of hiding underneath them. On the platinum edition, Monochrome reported, that layout sits on a blue-green Grand Feu enamel dial fired in Rexhepi's own workshops — enamel being the least forgiving material in the craft, the kind that cracks in the kiln if the firing is a breath off.
Built like almost nothing else
Turn the watch over and the argument finishes itself. The caseback view is all symmetry — barrel up top, gear train running down the middle, the balance held under a transversal bridge — finished with the deep Geneva stripes, black-polished steel and hand-cut internal angles that collectors cross oceans to inspect through a loupe. Monochrome reported that the vast majority of the watch is made in-house the traditional way: the case, the enamel dial, the movement and its parts, even the hand-sewn nubuck strap, with almost every atelier involved sitting on the same street in Geneva.
None of that is how the big groups build chronographs, because none of it scales. A manufacture movement shared across a catalogue amortizes its development over tens of thousands of watches. Rexhepi developed this calibre for one watch, produced in numbers you could count in an afternoon, and finished every visible surface like the jury was already watching. Tonight, the jury was.
Fifty watches a year, one trophy
The price tells the same story from the other side. Monochrome reported the RRCHF at CHF 150,000 whether the case is gold or platinum, and Watchonista's In-Depth feature on the watch independently lists the same CHF 150,000 figure — a serious number held flat across both metals, for a watch almost nobody reading this will ever be offered. Hodinkee's In-Depth put the same price in context against the Patek Philippe and A. Lange & Söhne chronographs it out-thins on the wrist. Allocation-only is not a marketing line at this production level; it is arithmetic.
Context matters here, too. Monochrome reported that last year's Aiguille d'Or went to the Breguet Classique Souscription 2025 — a heritage giant collecting the trophy in its anniversary year. Twelve months later the same prize sits with an independent who signs his dials “Hgers à Genève” — Horlogers de Genève, watchmakers in Geneva — because the plural is the point: a small team of watchmakers, on one street, out-building the industry that surrounds them.
There will be bigger watch stories this year by revenue. There will not be a better one by meaning. The most coveted trophy in watchmaking just went to a man who makes 50 watches a year — and he took it with a chronograph he built from a blank page.
