RJ Mitte, the actor who grew up on screen as Walter White Jr. across all five seasons of Breaking Bad, has died at the age of 34. Cameron County Justice of the Peace Cyndi Hinojosa told USA Today that Mitte was declared dead Monday afternoon at his home in Brownsville, Texas, and his representatives confirmed the news in a statement reported by Reuters and Page Six, describing him as a "beloved actor, philanthropist and passionate disability rights advocate" and asking for privacy for his family. Law enforcement officials said a death investigation is ongoing, and his representatives did not announce a cause of death.
For a generation of television viewers, Mitte was Flynn — the breakfast-loving, fiercely loyal son caught between Bryan Cranston's Walter White and Anna Gunn's Skyler as the family at the center of Vince Gilligan's AMC drama came apart. He appeared in 56 episodes between 2008 and 2013, from the pilot to the finale, and his performance carried a weight no acting coach could have manufactured: like his character, Mitte lived with cerebral palsy, diagnosed when he was three years old, though his own condition was milder than Walt Jr.'s.
01 From Jackson, Mississippi to the most acclaimed show on television
Roy Frank Mitte III was born on August 21, 1992, in Jackson, Mississippi. He moved to Hollywood in 2006 with acting ambitions and a deliberate strategy — working with a talent manager to find roles where his disability could educate viewers rather than be written around. He picked up background work on Hannah Montana and Everybody Hates Chris before landing the role that would define him, at an age when most actors are still auditioning for guest spots.
Breaking Bad became a phenomenon slowly, then all at once, and Mitte's Walt Jr. was its moral thermometer. As Walter lied, Walt Jr. believed him. As the empire grew, the son defended the father he thought he knew. The show's most devastating late turns landed precisely because Mitte had spent five seasons making the character's innocence believable. The series ended as one of the most decorated dramas in television history, and Mitte had been there for essentially all of it.
02 A career that kept going — and a cause that never stopped
Mitte did not treat Breaking Bad as a finish line. He starred in the ABC Family drama Switched at Birth in 2014, appeared in Vegas, This Close and Now Apocalypse, voiced Walt Jr. again for an animated appearance on Robot Chicken in 2016, and tested himself on The Celebrity Island with Bear Grylls in 2017. On film, he headlined the thriller The Oak Room (2020), appeared in The Recall, Time Share and Standing Up for Sunny, and both starred in and executive produced the drama Triumph (2021), about a high school wrestler with cerebral palsy. In 2022 he joined the Netflix animated superhero series The Guardians of Justice.
The advocacy, though, was the through-line of his adult life. Mitte served as a Screen Actors Guild spokesman for actors with disabilities and received the SAG-AFTRA Harold Russell Award in 2013. He was a celebrity ambassador for United Cerebral Palsy and for Shriners Children's, president of The Mitte Foundation, and a member of SAG-AFTRA's Performers with Disabilities Committee. It added up to a career spent arguing — by example as much as by speech — that disabled actors should be cast, full stop.
03 The last weeks
The news lands harder because Mitte's life appeared to be in an open, forward-looking chapter. He announced his engagement to Kennedy Suarez in October 2025, after proposing at a fundraising gala benefiting United Cerebral Palsy of San Diego. Less than a week ago, a podcast conversation about his life and career was posted online, in which he talked about how Breaking Bad changed his life and how close he remained to the cast years after the finale.
TMZ reported, citing the county official, that Mitte died by suicide. His representatives have not confirmed a cause, and officials say the investigation continues. Previously is reporting the death as confirmed by his representatives and will update this story as verified information becomes available.
He was 34 years old. He is survived by his family and by Suarez. For the fans who watched him grow up at the White family breakfast table, and for the disabled performers who saw a door opened because he walked through it first, the loss is the same: a working actor and a working advocate, gone in the middle of the story.
