Spider-Man: Brand New Day Swings Onto Digital Today — and Rewrites the Box Office Record Book

The biggest movie of the year comes home Tuesday: $29.99 to buy, $24.99 to rent. As the web-slinger lands on Prime Video, he does so with a $954 million domestic record — and one wild box office twist at the very top of the worldwide chart.

The most successful theatrical run in North American box office history is coming to the living room. Spider-Man: Brand New Day, the Tom Holland film that has made roughly $954 million in the United States and Canada and $2.5 billion worldwide since its July 31 debut, is available to buy or rent on digital platforms starting today, Tuesday, October 6 — with Prime Video as the flagship storefront.

The Short Version

  • Digital today: Spider-Man: Brand New Day is on Prime Video starting Oct. 6 — $29.99 to buy, $24.99 to rent, with 4K Blu-ray and DVD following on Dec. 15.
  • The records: the largest opening weekend ever ($360M domestic / $932M worldwide), the highest-grossing domestic release ever at ~$954M, and the third film in history past $2.5B worldwide.
  • The twist: the worldwide chart just changed hands — Avengers: Endgame reclaimed No. 1 from Avatar on Oct. 4 via its “Encore” re-release, leaving Brand New Day at No. 3.
  • Still to come: a Netflix streaming window is expected in late 2026 or early 2027, and Sony is reportedly plotting a theatrical re-release with extra footage.

How to watch it tonight

Page Six reports the film is streaming now on Prime Video, and available for digital purchase across storefronts. The price: $29.99 to buy or $24.99 to rent. You do not need a paid Prime membership to buy it — any free Amazon account will do — and the rental terms are standard: you get 30 days to start watching once you rent, and 48 hours to finish once you press play. TV Insider lists the premiere as “Prime Video & More,” meaning the usual digital retailers are carrying it alongside Amazon.

Prefer physical media? Sony has dated the Blu-ray, 4K and regular DVD for December 15, and preorders are already open. And if you’d rather see it huge, the theatrical run isn’t over either — Sony extended the engagement through November 16, according to ComingSoon.net. Two months after release, the movie is still pulling audiences into theaters.

The numbers: a run for the record books

The box office story here is genuinely historic. Brand New Day opened July 31 to what Page Six calls “the largest opening weekend of all time” — $360 million domestically and $932 million worldwide, per Sony’s figures cited by CinemaExpress. From there it just kept climbing, hitting every domestic milestone from $400 million to $900 million faster than any film ever released, per Sony’s numbers.

In mid-September the film did what a decade of would-be blockbusters could not: it toppled Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($936.6 million) to become the highest-grossing film of all time in the United States and Canada, reaching the mark in just 47 days. As of Oct. 6, the domestic total stands at roughly $954 million, per Page Six — $954.5 million in the latest studio tallies cited by Zoom TV and other trackers. The international gross adds another $1.551 billion, for a worldwide total of about $2.506 billion, per Sony Pictures. That makes it the third film in history to cross the $2.5 billion mark — and the first solo superhero movie ever to do it. For context, it cost an estimated $225 million to produce, per The Numbers — more than an elevenfold return. For the full October box office picture, see Previously’s October box office coverage.

The box office wrinkle: the worldwide crown just changed hands

Here is where the story gets deliciously complicated. According to Page Six, Brand New Day is “the third highest-grossing film of all time worldwide behind Avatar and Avengers: Endgame” — and that No. 3 ranking is solid. But the order of the two films ahead of it shifted this past weekend, so here is the exact sequence.

Avatar held the all-time worldwide record for a decade. Avengers: Endgame took it during its original 2019 run. Avatar grabbed it back in March 2021 via a Chinese re-release. And now the pendulum has swung again: on October 4, after the second weekend of its “Encore” theatrical re-release, Endgame reclaimed the No. 1 spot, reported WDW News Today. The re-release — launched September 25 with new footage teasing December’s Avengers: Doomsday and an intro from Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans — has added roughly $126 million to the 2019 film’s lifetime total, per Deadline’s tallies. That puts Endgame at about $2.9255 billion worldwide against Avatar’s $2.9237 billion: a gap of under $2 million at the top of the chart, and the third trade of the record since 2019. The record’s new keepers celebrated the moment — directors Joe and Anthony Russo posted a thank-you video to fans on Oct. 4, closing with Tony Stark’s immortal line: “we love you 3000.”

So the current worldwide top three, as of this week: No. 1, Avengers: Endgame (~$2.926 billion); No. 2, Avatar (~$2.924 billion); No. 3, Spider-Man: Brand New Day (~$2.506 billion). Everything Page Six reported about the film’s ranking holds — it is third worldwide — only the two names above it have swapped seats. The movie itself: a darker, more mature Spider-Man

Brand New Day marks Holland’s fourth outing as the solo star of a Spider-Man film — and his seventh overall appearance as Peter Parker, per Page Six. He returns alongside his real-life wife Zendaya as MJ and Jacob Batalon as Ned Leeds. The ensemble around them is one of the biggest Marvel has assembled for a solo outing: Sadie Sink as Jean Grey, the telepathic young mutant whose powers drive the plot; Jon Bernthal as Frank Castle / Punisher; Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova; Mark Ruffalo’s Bruce Banner / Hulk; Michael Mando reprising Mac Gargan / Scorpion from Homecoming; Marisa Tomei as May Parker; Tramell Tillman as Department of Damage Control chief Bill Metzger; and Liza Colón-Zayas as NYPD detective Jean DeWolff.

The story picks up in the immediate aftermath of 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home: Peter is living in a world where everyone — including MJ — has forgotten he exists. He stays dedicated to keeping New York safe, but a new telepathic threat emerges and his superpowers begin to evolve in dangerous, uncontrollable ways. Behind the camera is Destin Daniel Cretton, the Shang-Chi director, working from a screenplay by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers — the duo behind the other Holland Spider-Man films — with Kevin Feige, Amy Pascal, Avi Arad and Rachel O’Connor producing, per TV Insider.

Critics found the gamble worked. The New York Post and Page Six critic Johnny Oleksinski gave it 3.5 of 4 stars, calling it a “much darker and more mature movie” and singling out a “raw and vulnerable Holland” doing “his best acting of the franchise.” The darker turn clearly did not hurt ticket sales.

What’s next: Netflix, Disney+, and a possible return to theaters

Not in a hurry to buy or rent? The subscription-streaming path is murky, as it always is with Sony titles. Because the film is distributed by Sony rather than Disney, it will not go straight to Disney+ like other Marvel films. Under Sony’s multiyear agreement, Under Sony’s multiyear agreement with Netflix, the streamer is the exclusive pay-one-window home for Sony’s feature films in the U.S., per Decider’s reporting — and Decider estimates Brand New Day could land there in late 2026 or early 2027, with Disney+ following sometime in 2027, possibly around April. None of those dates are official. Until then, buy or rent is the only way in — alongside the rest of Netflix’s big October additions, like Ben Affleck’s Animals on Oct. 9.

There is also a chance the movie returns to cinemas before it ever reaches streaming. Multiple outlets, citing Deadline, report that Sony is preparing a theatrical re-release with additional footage — including a restored cameo from Rosario Dawson as Claire Temple, a scene she filmed (in which her character cared for an injured Peter) that was cut from the theatrical version, per CinemaExpress. Nothing is officially confirmed, and the plans could change — but studios have rarely left this much box office on the table. A reissue could be the push that gets Brand New Day toward the one milestone it has not touched: $1 billion domestic.

For now, the crown of the biggest movie ever in North America comes home today — and for $24.99, you can rent the record books themselves.
