Houston Dynamo FC 0, St. Louis CITY SC 1 at Shell Energy Stadium — a goalless Decision Day game was settled in the seventh minute of stoppage time by centre-back Lukas MacNaughton, whose goal was St. Louis's only shot on target all night and took third place in the West.
St. Louis CITY SC beat Houston Dynamo FC 1–0 at Shell Energy Stadium in Houston on Saturday, November 7, 2026 — MLS Decision Day, the final day of the regular season — in a game that decided home-field advantage rather than survival. Both clubs had already qualified for the Audi 2026 MLS Cup Playoffs and arrived level on 51 points with identical 14-10-9 records, Houston fifth on tiebreakers; USA TODAY's Decision Day scenarios had St. Louis clinching home-field advantage in the Round One Best-of-3 Series with a win or a draw, and Houston needing more.
For 96 minutes neither side found the goal. Houston owned the chances — Sportradar's match record credits the Dynamo with 21 shots and nine corners to St. Louis's 12 shots and three corners — and St. Louis goalkeeper Ben Lundt made six saves, including Duncan McGuire's effort at 86'. Houston kept pushing into stoppage time and still could not beat him.
Then the game's last attack settled it. Alexandru Matan, on since 65' for Tomas Ostrak, raced down the right on a breakaway, cut back a defender and found the trailing MacNaughton, whose one-time finish beat Houston goalkeeper Jonathan Bond at 90'+7' — the St. Louis centre-back's only shot of the night, and St. Louis's only shot on target in the entire match. Full time came at 90'+8'. The goal also denied Houston a single-season club record for clean sheets, as the Associated Press recorded. It was the third meeting between the clubs this year, after the U.S. Open Cup quarterfinal and the August league game, and St. Louis took this one too.
The club's own post said what the three points carried: "3 BIG POINTS TO SECURE THIRD." St. Louis finish third in the Western Conference at 15-10-9 with home-field advantage in Round One, where they face the sixth-seeded LAFC; the win also snapped a five-match winless streak, as Field Level Media's account recorded. Houston finish fifth at 14-11-9 and go into the playoffs without home-field advantage, taking on the fourth-seeded San Jose Earthquakes.
