LOS ANGELES
The Los Angeles Police Department issued a citywide tactical alert on Saturday, October 17, 2026, following two reported stabbings near the Taste of Soul Family Festival in Crenshaw, in a day that paired one of South Los Angeles's largest annual street festivals with a police investigation that organizers said stayed on the outskirts of the event.
ABC7 reported the tactical alert on Saturday, and MyNewsLA and City News Service reported the details provided by LAPD Officer Charles Miller. A citywide tactical alert is a department posture that keeps officers on duty beyond their regular shifts so the department has more personnel available across the city. It does not, by itself, describe what happened at a single scene. In this case, police linked the alert to the reports near the festival on Saturday, and in ABC7's update the alert remained in effect into Saturday evening.
The first report, at Crenshaw and King
The first stabbing was reported at about 2:45 p.m. near Crenshaw Boulevard and West Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, at or near the festival. According to Officer Charles Miller, via City News Service reporting carried by MyNewsLA, a group became involved in a fight for reasons that were not clear, and at least one person was stabbed. The victim and the group of suspects fled before officers located them, Miller said. Investigators were checking area hospitals for a possible victim. The circumstances of the fight and the extent of any injuries were not immediately known.
That uncertainty is important to how Saturday's reports should be read. Police had a report of a stabbing, a time and a location, and a description of a fight involving a group. They did not have, in the information released Saturday, a victim located at the scene or a confirmed account of how serious any injury was. Checking hospitals is a standard next step in that situation, because a person who leaves a scene after being injured often appears first in an emergency department rather than in a police interview. Previously's Los Angeles coverage on Saturday also included Los Angeles County's first recorded cychlorphine death and the public warning that followed.

A second report, and a large-group call
A second stabbing was later reported near the event. The Los Angeles Fire Department said one person was transported to a hospital with possible stab wounds after officers responded in the 4200 block of Crenshaw Boulevard. That second report gave investigators a transported patient, which is a different position from the first report, but authorities had not said on Saturday whether the two stabbings were related. The investigation was ongoing, and no additional details had been released in the reports available Saturday night.
Police also confirmed a call involving a large group at 5:34 p.m. near Crenshaw Boulevard and Stocker Street in Leimert Park. The reports available Saturday did not connect that call to either stabbing as a confirmed fact, and it should be read as a separate confirmed call in the same broader area on the same afternoon unless investigators later link it.
Organizers: activity was on the outskirts, festival ended as planned
Festival organizers gave a different view of the day from inside the event. In a statement reported by ABC7, organizers said the police activity occurred outside, on the outskirts of the festival grounds, did not disrupt the event, and did not impact operations. The festival, organizers said, ended as planned. That statement and the police reports can both hold at the same time: a serious incident near a large street festival can require a major police response without entering the festival footprint or stopping the program inside it. Crenshaw Boulevard on festival day is both a festival street and a working city corridor at its edges, and the distinction between inside and on the outskirts was the central point organizers made.

The festival itself
The festival was the 21st annual Taste of Soul Family Festival, held Saturday, October 17, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., free to attend, along Crenshaw Boulevard, known locally as The Shaw, between Stocker Street and Obama Boulevard. It is presented by Bakewell Media and the Los Angeles Sentinel and was founded by Danny J. Bakewell Sr. This year's festival included more than 200 vendors, three music stages, a Children's World area, and health, wellness and community resources, according to festival background from the Los Angeles Sentinel and EURWeb. It is, by design, a full-day, family-centered gathering that draws large crowds to Crenshaw and Leimert Park.
That scale is why the location language in Saturday's reports matters. Near the festival, at the festival, and on the outskirts of the festival describe different things, and the sources used different words. Police placed the first report at Crenshaw Boulevard and West Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, at or near the festival. The Fire Department's second report was in the 4200 block of Crenshaw Boulevard. Organizers placed the police activity on the outskirts. Previously is preserving those distinctions rather than collapsing them into a single claim about the festival grounds, which no source in Saturday's reporting established.
What is known, and what is not
By Saturday night, what was known was narrow and should stay narrow. Two stabbings were reported near the event. One person was transported with possible stab wounds in the second report, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department. The first victim had not been located by officers at the scene, according to Officer Miller, and investigators were checking area hospitals. No authority had said the two incidents were related. No additional details had been released. The tactical alert had been issued on Saturday and, in ABC7's update, remained in effect into Saturday evening.
For people who attended Taste of Soul on Saturday, the organizers' account was that the vendors, stages and family programming ran their course and the festival closed as planned. For police, the work after the festival was the investigation: locating any victim from the first report, following up on the person transported in the second, determining whether the two reports connect, and accounting for the large-group call at Crenshaw Boulevard and Stocker Street at 5:34 p.m. Previously will update this story if LAPD releases additional confirmed details, and more Los Angeles and regional coverage is on the news front.
