Olivia Wilde's The Invite Makes Its Streaming Premiere on HBO Max This Weekend

The Invite, Olivia Wilde's A24 comedy-thriller starring Wilde, Seth Rogen, Penélope Cruz and Edward Norton, begins streaming on HBO Max on Friday, October 23, headlining the platform's October 23-25 weekend lineup, Parade reports. The film follows a stagnating married couple whose dinner with their boundary-pushing neighbors spirals into an unpredictable night.

The dinner party that defined the summer at the box office moves to the couch this weekend. The Invite, Olivia Wilde's A24 comedy-thriller starring Wilde, Seth Rogen, Penélope Cruz and Edward Norton, makes its streaming premiere on HBO Max on Friday, October 23, the centerpiece of the platform's October 23-25 lineup. Parade, in its weekend viewing guide published October 21, called the film "the A24 comedy-thriller of the summer" finally arriving on streaming, and placed it at the head of a weekend slate that also includes a new prestige drama and a hit romantic comedy. The film will also make its linear HBO debut on Saturday, October 24, at 8:00 p.m. ET, according to BroadwayWorld's report of the announcement.

The streaming date has been set for weeks. WhenToStream reported that the film's subscription streaming debut lands on October 23 following a theatrical run that began June 26 and a digital on-demand release on August 11. That arc — a hit summer theatrical release, a late-summer digital window, and an autumn streaming premiere as a platform's headline weekend title — has become the standard second life for a mid-budget adult comedy, and The Invite arrives on HBO Max with more momentum than most: it is the rare original, star-driven comedy for adults that audiences actually showed up for in theaters first.

One dinner, four people, no exits

The premise is built for a single room and four performers. Wilde and Rogen play Angela and Joe, a married couple whose relationship is stagnating. In an attempt to reignite their connection, they accept a dinner invitation from their eccentric upstairs neighbors, played by Cruz and Norton, a couple with none of the hosts' inhibitions and a gift for pushing every boundary the evening offers. What begins as an awkward social gathering spirals into what Parade summarized as "an unpredictable night of tension and unexpected propositions." The film is an English-language remake of the 2020 Spanish film The People Upstairs (Sentimental) by Cesc Gay, and Wilde directed from a screenplay by Will McCormack and Rashida Jones, according to WhenToStream and BroadwayWorld.

The ensemble is the argument for the film, and it is why HBO Max is treating a streaming premiere as an event. Wilde directs and co-leads, continuing the directing career she built with Booksmart and Don't Worry Darling, and she plays the half of the central marriage most aware that it is in trouble. Rogen brings the everyman warmth that makes Joe's discomfort comic rather than merely sad. Cruz and Norton, by contrast, arrive as the evening's disruptive force: glamorous, unbothered and entirely willing to say the things the hosts have been avoiding. A chamber piece lives or dies on whether four actors can sustain escalating tension at a dinner table for a feature's running time, and this is a cast assembled precisely for that test — two proven comic leads against two dramatic heavyweights playing agents of chaos.

Why this is the weekend's headline title

Parade's weekend guide framed the HBO Max lineup as a deliberate spread: one star-driven film premiere, one prestige drama and one hit romcom. The Invite is the piece of that slate with a theatrical track record and an A24 badge, and it fills a gap streaming platforms chronically under-serve, the adult comedy built on writing and performance rather than franchise machinery. ComingSoon, reporting the streaming date from Warner Bros. Discovery's announcement, noted the film's path from a festival world premiere at Sundance through a wide theatrical expansion in July, the kind of rollout that used to be routine for a film like this and is now distinctive enough to be a selling point.

Practically speaking, the premiere timing matters too. A Friday streaming debut with a Saturday linear HBO airing gives the film two separate opening nights, and a premise that makes it a natural word-of-mouth title: it is, by design, a movie about a night that gets retold. Parade advised viewers, with a wink, to make it the centerpiece of a movie night this weekend: "Just maybe don't invite company over to do so," Parade wrote.

The premiere also extends HBO Max’s run as the subscription home for A24’s theatrical slate, a pipeline BroadwayWorld noted in its report of the announcement, which pointed subscribers to the service’s broader A24 collection alongside its Warner Bros., DC and Studio Ghibli libraries. For A24, the arrangement gives its summer comedy a second premiere moment in front of the platform’s full subscriber base; for HBO Max, it supplies the kind of recognizable, review-backed film premiere that anchors a weekend slate and gives subscribers a clear first click on Friday night.

The Invite begins streaming on HBO Max on Friday, October 23, and airs on HBO on Saturday, October 24, at 8:00 p.m. ET. For more of the week's premieres and finales, see Previously's news index and the browse hub.
