A · The Night's Big Story
Boston 107, New York 103 — and the final score undersells how decided this felt once Jayson Tatum got going. The Knicks led early, by as many as five in the first quarter, the lead changed hands eight times in the first half alone (12 in the game), and Boston's edge at the break was a single point, 50–49. After halftime there was exactly one swing left in the game, and Tatum made it himself: 16 points in a third quarter Boston won 33–24, the lead taken for good in the period's opening minutes and never handed back.
This is the night's Big Story because it was the night's only true heavyweight fight — two teams that expect to see each other in May, at TD Garden, decided by the best player on the floor playing like it. Tatum finished with 36 points, 9 rebounds and 7 assists on 14-for-26 shooting. Jalen Brunson, his opposite number in every billing of this rivalry, had 19 on 7-for-17. The gap between the two closers was the game (see The Argument).
And New York kept coming — Karl-Anthony Towns (22 and 10), OG Anunoby (20, 10 and 8), Miles McBride's 20 off the bench — until Brunson's pull-up cut it to 99–98 with 1:41 left and the building got quiet. Tatum answered all of it: a 19-footer at 1:24, an 18-footer at :49.7, and the 25-foot three at :30.2 that ended the argument, seven straight Boston points. Brunson missed two free throws with 3.6 seconds left, down four, and that was the night: Boston 1–1, New York 0–2, and a reminder delivered early — after a 2025-26 season that lasted him 16 games, Jayson Tatum is all the way back.
B · Tonight's Results — The Board
All 12 finals, verified against ESPN box scores after the late games closed. The headliner sits at the bottom of the board: Boston 107, New York 103. Above it, the night's texture — a wire-to-wire rout, a 47-point blowout, and Giannis Antetokounmpo's second straight monster line in a loss.
Giannis watch: 36 points, 12 rebounds, 5 assists for Miami in Detroit's 128–111 win — after Wednesday's 28 and 10 in the loss to Minnesota, Antetokounmpo has 64 points in two games and the Heat are 0–2. Minnesota's 115–93 win in Orlando had zero lead changes: the Wolves led wire to wire. Domantas Sabonis's 27 points, 19 rebounds and 10 assists for Sacramento also came in a loss — Portland's balance (Avdija 26, Camara 19, Lillard 19) beat the night's biggest line out west.
C · The Receipt — What the Numbers Actually Say
| Q1 | Q2 | Q3 | Q4 | T | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| NY | 27 | 22 | 24 | 30 | 103 |
| BOS | 26 | 24 | 33 | 24 | 107 |
The question: Was this a duel — or a takeover wearing a duel's clothes?
The defining stat: 25 — of Jayson Tatum's 36 points came after halftime: 16 in the third quarter Boston used to take the lead for good, then seven straight Boston points across the final 1:24 after New York had cut it to one.
The turning point: The third quarter. Boston won it 33–24 with Tatum scoring 16, took the lead for good in its opening minutes, and stretched it to 12 early in the fourth (86–74). New York never led in the second half — every push from there ran into Tatum holding the ball.
New York won most of the team sheet — rebounds 44–37, assists 27–25, bench points 36–24, second-chance points 21–9 — and lost anyway. Boston's edges were the ones that close games: the paint (38–30), the turnover count (11 against New York's 18 — seven extra empty trips in a four-point game), and the only closer still scoring at the end. The Receipt's read: a four-point margin with a 17-point gap between the two stars is not a coin flip that landed Boston's way. It is a hierarchy, measured.
Context, from the Stats Hub's 2025-26 baseline: Brunson was the bigger scorer last season (26.0 per game across 74 games) because Tatum's season lasted 16 games. After halftime tonight, Tatum outscored Brunson 25–12 by himself.

E · The Argument — Tatum vs Brunson
Every Celtics–Knicks night gets billed as a duel between the two closers. For a half, it was one — 50–49 Boston, eight lead changes. Then the second half started, and only one closer kept showing up in the scoring column.

| TONIGHT | TONIGHT | |
|---|---|---|
| 36 | POINTS | 19 |
| 9 | REBOUNDS | 2 |
| 7 | ASSISTS | 4 |
| 14-26 | FIELD GOALS | 7-17 |
| 3-10 | THREES | 2-5 |
| 5-5 | FREE THROWS | 3-6 |
| .596 | EFG% | .471 |
| +1 | PLUS / MINUS | +6 |
Both men played 37 minutes. Tatum took 26 shots because Boston's closing offense runs through him; Brunson took 17 because New York's is built to share — four Knicks scored 19 or more. The one row Brunson won, plus-minus, is the honest footnote: a hot Knicks bench (36 points) muddies lineup math. The cleaner sample is the close. After Brunson's pull-up at 1:41 cut it to 99–98, Tatum scored the next seven Boston points; Brunson's only remaining plays were two missed free throws at 3.6 seconds that would have cut it to two.
The verdict: this was not a duel Tatum edged — it was a duel for 24 minutes and a demonstration for 24 more. 36, 9 and 7 on .596 effective shooting against 19, 2 and 4 on .471, with the game's last seven decisive points. Brunson remains one of the league's most inevitable late-game guards most nights. This was not most nights. This was the night the other closer was better at everything the job asks.
THE BASELINE · 2025–26 PER GAME (PREVIOUSLY STATS HUB) PPG 21.8 / 26.0 · RPG 10.0 / 3.3 · APG 5.3 / 6.8 · FG% 41.1 / 46.7 — Tatum left, Brunson right. Tatum played 16 of 82 last season (74 for Brunson), so his baseline is a partial sample; the comparison keeps its exact configuration in the hub.

F · By the Numbers — Three Numbers
G · The Verdict — Night Three, Judged Carefully
Start with the hierarchy. Boston and New York both believe they are playing for June, and Friday night the difference between them was not depth, scheme or shooting luck — New York won most of those columns. It was that Boston's best player can still end an argument by himself. A contender with a closer like that is never really behind in a close game; it is just waiting for the last two minutes.
The counterweight is real, though: the Knicks' depth outscored Boston's bench 36–24, their size won the glass and the second-chance column 21–9, and they did it on the road in a rivalry game. If these teams meet in May, New York's path is the one that almost worked Friday — win everything except the duel, and hope the duel is merely great instead of this.
Elsewhere, the young season's loudest early pattern is depth over stardom: Minnesota is 2–0 after a wire-to-wire road rout won while its star shot 5-for-23; Atlanta won by 47 without a 20-point scorer; Detroit is 2–0 behind balance of its own. And the cautionary tale sits in Miami, where Giannis Antetokounmpo has 64 points in two games and the Heat are 0–2. Two nights is a trailer, not the movie — The Night Shift will keep the receipts either way.
