Thriller Was the Biggest Song in the World on Halloween

Michael Jackson's 44-year-old single topped Spotify's global chart for the first time on Halloween night — and with Prince Jackson campaigning for it, the song is now chasing the one crown it never got: No. 1 on the Hot 100.

On Saturday night, the most-played song on the planet was 44 years old. "Thriller" pulled 6,606,221 streams on Spotify worldwide on October 31 — No. 1 on the platform's global chart for the first time in its history, more than double what it did the day before. It beat "Ghostbusters" to the top, and it also hit No. 1 on Apple Music in the U.S.

Songs that old do not do that by accident. Not anymore. This one happened because somebody organized it.

A Son Asked. Fans Answered.

Prince Jackson went on KTLA in Los Angeles last week and said the quiet part out loud: "We are trying to get my father another number one." The goal is specific — the "Thriller" single, to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. He asked fans to stream it, buy it and request it at radio, and he put his name behind the fan-run Thriller Challenge, which ran October 30 to November 5: exactly the chart week that swallows Halloween whole.

The calendar cooperated. Halloween landed on a Saturday this year, so the Friday and Saturday plays stack inside one tracking week instead of splitting across two. The biggest two nights of the song's year counted together — and on the biggest of those nights, it was the biggest song in the world.

The One That Got Away

The strangest line on Michael Jackson's résumé might be this one: "Thriller" was never a No. 1 hit. The album sat on top of the Billboard 200 for a record 37 weeks and became the best-selling album of all time. Its title track — released last, the seventh of seven top 10 singles — peaked at No. 4 in 1984.

The song simply refuses to stay in its decade. It has come back to the Hot 100 every Halloween season since 2018: No. 31 that year, No. 19 in 2021, and last year all the way back to No. 10. This year it was already moving before the holiday — it re-entered at No. 20 on the chart dated November 7, with U.S. streams up 49% in the week before Halloween, and Billboard had flagged it in late October as a real No. 1 contender, with early streams running 42% ahead of last year's pace.

Six Decades Deep

Last year's No. 10 is the one that rewrote the record book. It made Jackson the first artist in Hot 100 history to score a top 10 hit in six different decades, passing Andy Williams and his five. The run: "Got to Be There" and "Ben" in the 1970s. "Billie Jean," "Beat It" and "Thriller" itself in the '80s. "Black or White" and "You Are Not Alone" in the '90s. "You Rock My World" in 2001. "Love Never Felt So Good" in 2014 and a posthumous feature on Drake's "Don't Matter to Me" in 2018. Then "Thriller" again, in the 2020s. Count the Jackson 5's "I Want You Back," a top 10 hit in December 1969 with an 11-year-old Michael out front, and the man has touched seven.

And 2026 Was Already His Year

None of this came out of nowhere. The biopic Michael put the catalog back in front of everybody this spring, and in May the Thriller album returned to No. 1 on Billboard's Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart — its first week up there since 1984. In June, "Billie Jean" topped Spotify's global chart. Halloween was simply the title track's turn.

The verdict lands next week, when Billboard publishes the Hot 100 that counts Halloween. If "Thriller" takes it, a song that peaked at No. 4 during the Reagan administration becomes a No. 1 in 2026 — and Prince gets to say he gave his father one more.

The Culture Desk's read: Catalog songs spike every holiday — that is just the calendar. A fanbase running a coordinated chart campaign behind the artist's own son, and a 44-year-old single spending Halloween night as the biggest song in the world, is not the calendar. It is a legacy that still moves like a new release. More from Previously's Culture desk.
