Three matchdays in, five teams still have perfect records. PSG, Liverpool and Real Madrid on that list surprises nobody. Aston Villa and Real Betis on it tells you what kind of season this is.
UPDATE — Tuesday, November 3, 2026: This preview now carries the full matchup layer: official highlights from the weekend and Matchday 3 beside the sections they belong to, Game Center links on tonight's three marquee fixtures, and a By the Numbers section linking The Breakdown pages for the men deciding them.
Tuesday is the halfway turn. The top eight go straight to the round of 16, the next sixteen into the play-offs, everybody else home in January. Nobody gets eliminated on Matchday 4 — but the teams who spend the winter doing maths are usually the ones who wasted nights like this.
The Perfect Record Meets the Record Chase
Barcelona vs. Aston Villa, 12:00 p.m. PT, Camp Nou — follow the match in the Game Center.
Villa have won all three — 3–2 at Club Brugge, a 6–0 demolition of Fenerbahçe, 3–1 over Viking — and sit second, behind PSG only on goals scored. Unai Emery brings them back to the ground where his PSG once lost 6–1 in this competition's most famous collapse, and he brings them there perfect. The clubs have not met since the 1983 Super Cup, which Villa won. Domestically it has been patchier — a League Cup exit at Bournemouth, a draw with Fulham on Saturday — but in Europe nobody has touched them. Nicolas Jackson, eight goals in twelve Villa appearances, leads the line.
Barcelona hold eighth — the last automatic spot — with six points, and the route explains the nerves: Feyenoord beaten 5–1, a 4–1 win at Galatasaray, then a 4–2 loss away to the holders, PSG. On Saturday they answered the loud way: Alavés hammered 6–1 at home, top of La Liga again, Hansi Flick's 100th win in charge. Yamal scored twice and made another; Raphinha scored twice too.
Yamal is the subplot that might become the headline. His goal in Paris was his 13th in the Champions League before turning 20, pulling him level with Mbappé's teenage record in this competition. One more tonight and it is his alone. He chases it with Barcelona's defence patched up behind him — Koundé, Eric García and Christensen all out, Dani Olmo too — and Villa are built to make a makeshift back line pay.
Bayern Bring the Ballon d'Or Winner to a Wall
Atlético de Madrid vs. Bayern München, 12:00 p.m. PT, Metropolitano — follow the match in the Game Center.
On paper, the heavyweight fight of the night. On the table, 16th against 14th — which is why it matters. Bayern have five points: a 5–0 opening win over Bodø/Glimt, then draws at Viking and at home to Arsenal. Atlético have four: beaten at Liverpool, winners at home over Manchester United, held at Stuttgart.
Bayern have scored ten times in three European games and arrive with Harry Kane a week removed from winning the Ballon d'Or. The supporting cast stayed home — Jamal Musiala and Luis Díaz trained alone on Monday and miss out, Serge Gnabry is injured too, and head coach Vincent Kompany is sick, leaving assistant Aaron Danks in charge.
Waiting for them is the Atlético nobody enjoys visiting: second in La Liga, three goals conceded in nine matches, unbeaten in sixteen straight home European games against German opposition. Bayern's job is the hardest sentence in football: break that down with a depleted attack, or drift further below the automatic line.
Old Trafford Has Run Out of Excuses
Manchester United vs. Roma, 12:00 p.m. PT, Old Trafford — follow the match in the Game Center.
United are 21st with three points, and the European numbers are the kind version of their season. They have not won in any competition since beating Sabah on September 10 — nine matches ago. Since then in Europe: a 2–0 loss at Atlético, a 4–1 beating at Como. Domestically: 17th in the Premier League, beaten at Chelsea on Saturday. Michael Carrick needs a result tonight the way a man in the rain needs a roof.
Roma are not the visitors you would pick for that job. Gasperini's side sit 15th on four points — a 4–3 loss to Real Madrid, four put past Slovan Bratislava — and arrive unbeaten in five, fresh off scoring five at Udinese on Saturday. Donyell Malen already has eight league goals and three in this competition. United are inside the play-off places, but only just.
By the Numbers
That record chase is the thread through tonight's lead game, and The Breakdown is where both sides of it live: Lamine Yamal's page and Kylian Mbappé's page carry their full sheets — the current season, the career line and the peak years behind them — inside the same hub this desk builds its matchup numbers from.
The men deciding the other marquee games are in there too: Nicolas Jackson, who leads Villa's line at Camp Nou, in the Premier League universe; Donyell Malen and Matías Soulé, the Roma pair United have to stop, in Serie A's. One hub, every sheet — that is the evidence behind calling this a big night, not just the fixture list.
The Rest of the Night
The holders headline the supporting card. Villarreal vs. Paris Saint-Germain (12:00 p.m. PT) pairs the team on top of the table — PSG, nine points, fourteen goals — with a Villarreal side that has scored eight and conceded eight on its way to three points. Expect goals.
Feyenoord vs. Inter (12:00 p.m. PT) is a relegation fight in a big fixture's clothes. Both have three points. Inter found a first win last time out, 1–0 over Shakhtar through Carlos Augusto, after losses to Real Madrid and Club Brugge. Feyenoord, 26th, sit in the elimination places and cannot afford another empty night in Rotterdam.
The early window, 9:45 a.m. PT: Shakhtar Donetsk vs. Sporting CP, Shakhtar's home fixture staged in London, pairs 17th (four points) with a Sporting side on six that can tighten its grip on the play-off places. Galatasaray vs. VfB Stuttgart in Istanbul sends Victor Osimhen and friends — 23rd, three points, running out of room — against a Stuttgart team sixth on seven points and playing like it means to stay there.
And the strugglers: Bodø/Glimt vs. Lille (12:00 p.m. PT) gives pointless, 35th-placed Lille one more chance to start their season, in the Norwegian Arctic. LASK vs. Slovan Bratislava (12:00 p.m. PT) matters more than it looks — LASK hold 24th, the last play-off seat in the building; Slovan sit bottom, pointless, goal difference already minus twelve.
Previously's Take
Villa are the story of this league phase, but Camp Nou is where unbeaten runs go to get audited — Barcelona's attack at home is a different exam from anything Emery's side has sat, and Yamal plays like a kid who circled this record weeks ago. Expect Villa's run to end tonight, Bayern to leave Madrid with a point and a headache, and United's season to get louder before it gets better.
