The last point was the smallest one. The game was tied 111–111 with 24 seconds left, P.J. Washington had just fouled him, and Victor Wembanyama stood at the free-throw line with two shots and the loudest stat line of the young season hanging on them. He missed the first. He made the second. San Antonio 112, Dallas 111 — and a career night survived by a single point at Frost Bank Center on Wednesday.
Start with the line, because the line is the story: 52 points, a career high, past the 50 he scored against Washington on November 14, 2024. Twenty-four rebounds, tying the best mark of his career. Eight blocks, two steals, 34 minutes, a plus-23 in a game his team won by one. He shot 16-for-28 from the field and 19-for-23 at the line, and the only place Dallas ever really stopped him was the 3-point arc, where he went 1-for-8. Everything else ran through him.
A first half nobody had ever had
By halftime he had 29 points, 15 rebounds and five blocks, and San Antonio led 68–51. USA TODAY noted that no player in the play-by-play era, going back to 1997-98, had ever recorded 25 points, 10 rebounds and five blocks in a single half; Wembanyama's half was 29, 15 and five. All seven of his made field goals before the break came inside the restricted area, he made all 15 of his first-half free throws, and late in the second quarter he blocked three Dallas shots in the space of 13 seconds. The Mavericks were not playing badly. They were playing against something they had no answer for.
The combination that was missing from his résumé
Scan the first 215 games of his career — regular season and playoffs, preseason not counted — and one combination never appears: 50 points, 20 rebounds and seven blocks in the same game. Not once. Wednesday he did all three at once, and the 24 rebounds tied the career best he set in the playoffs last May. Widen the lens and the company gets thinner still: since blocks became an official statistic in 1974, only Bob McAdoo had ever gone for 50 points, 20 rebounds and five blocks in a game before Wednesday. Wembanyama joined him — with eight blocks, not five.
Dallas made him earn the ending
It was a 19-point game at its widest and 68–51 at the half, and Dallas spent the second half taking all of it back — 29–22 in the third quarter, 31–22 in the fourth. Cooper Flagg, who sat out the first meeting between these teams in October with a shoulder strain, went for 19 points, 10 rebounds and five assists in the duel of No. 1 picks. Kyrie Irving scored 29, P.J. Washington had 21 points and 10 rebounds, and Naji Marshall added 22 off the bench on 9-of-12 shooting. San Antonio got 21 from rookie Dylan Harper and 17 points with 10 rebounds from Stephon Castle, and still the lead was gone.
Wembanyama's tip-in with 1:47 left put the Spurs up 111–108. Dallas tied it anyway. Then Washington fouled him at 0:24, the building held its breath through a miss and a make, Kyrie Irving's 15-foot turnaround at 2.5 seconds missed, and Harper came down with the rebound. That was the game.
Fifty-two points bought San Antonio a one-point win and a sixth straight victory. The 52nd point — one free throw, after a miss, with everything tied — is the one that counted.
