Anthony Edwards scored 47 points on Monday night. By Tuesday, he was headed for knee surgery.
Edwards will undergo an arthroscopic procedure on his right knee and is expected to miss up to two months, cutting down the hottest start in the league just as it was taking off — 33.3 points a night on 48 percent shooting through four games. The Timberwolves (3-1) say the plan is a December return. The plan for tonight is simpler: hand the whole offense to LaMelo Ball and see what happens.
Minnesota can survive this, on paper. The Wolves won their first three games by 25, 22 and 23 points, they're averaging 122 a night, and Ball was brought here for exactly this — a second creator who can run a team. He has played facilitator so far (14.8 points, a team-high six assists a game), with flashes of the other gear: 21 points and five threes in the opener at Miami, 15 points and eight assists in 17 minutes against Toronto on Sunday. Tonight the flashes have to become the offense. Ayo Dosunmu is expected to slide into Edwards' starting spot, next to Jaden McDaniels, Jonathan Kuminga — facing the team that drafted him — and Rudy Gobert, who grabbed 20 rebounds in Cleveland on Monday and owns a glass matchup against a Warriors team starting 6-foot-6 Draymond Green at center.
Golden State (1-3) arrives with its own empty chairs. Jimmy Butler remains out after right ACL surgery, Kristaps Porzingis and Moses Moody are out too, and rookie Yaxel Lendeborg — who just put up 31 points, 12 rebounds and six assists in Denver — is questionable with a foot injury. His 87 points through four games are the most by a Warriors rookie in his first four games since Wilt Chamberlain in 1959.
What the Warriors do have is Stephen Curry, and he walks in warm. On Monday in Denver, Curry scored 24 points without missing: 8-for-8 from the floor, 3-for-3 from three, 5-for-5 at the line — the first 20-point game of his career without a missed field goal, with 17 of them coming in the third quarter. Golden State rested him Saturday and got its first win Monday, a 134-114 rout that ended a seven-game losing streak in Denver.
