LAS VEGAS — FRIDAY, OCTOBER 9, 2026 — Xbox picked a hell of a weekend to give away the store. The latest Free Play Days started Thursday and runs through Sunday, October 11, and this one's the AAA-heavy edition: four timed trials of big-name releases open to every Xbox player — no Game Pass, no subscription, no catch — plus ARC Raiders free for everyone and two bonus games for Game Pass members. If your backlog has been judging you, this weekend is the reprieve.
01 The Full Lineup
Seven games are in play, but they split into three different tiers of "free," so here's the breakdown. Open to absolutely everyone on Xbox: ARC Raiders (full game, no limits) and timed trials of High on Life 2, Stalker 2: Heart of Chornobyl, Little Nightmares III, and Rogue Waters. Then, for Game Pass members on any tier — Ultimate, Premium, even Essential — Screamer and Family Man unlock with no time restrictions, per reporting from Pure Xbox and TrueAchievements.
That five-for-everyone part is the headline. Free Play Days has historically been a Game Pass perk with a couple of crumbs for the free crowd. This weekend it's the reverse: the bulk of the lineup doesn't need a subscription at all. Only Screamer and Family Man ask for Game Pass, and both are playable on console and PC.
02 Four Trials, Four Very Different Weekends
A timed trial isn't a demo — it's the full game on a countdown clock. Outlets covering the event, including gg.deals, peg the four trials at roughly two hours of play each, which is honest design: long enough to know whether a game is for you, short enough to stop you gaming the system into a free completion. Here's what each one is.
Stalker 2: Heart of Chornobyl is the one to prioritize, because this is not the same game that launched to a chorus of performance complaints. GSC Game World has since shipped the 2.0 version, which outlets describe as overhauling just about every aspect of the game — performance, look, feel, systems. The trial arrives right after a reported 30% discount, which tells you GSC wants this to be the "fine, give it another chance" moment. The game itself is a standalone story set in the Chornobyl Anomalous Zone — mutants, anomalies, rival factions — so you don't need to have played the originals to dive in.

High on Life 2 is the 2026 sequel to Squanch Games' cult comedy FPS. If you liked Rick & Morty, the talking guns alone will sell you — the original's whole deal was weapons that won't shut up, and the sequel sends them into another intergalactic conspiracy. It's already in the Game Pass library, so subscribers aren't losing anything by trialing it, but for everyone else this is the free look.
Little Nightmares III is the franchise's first game without Tarsier Studios — Supermassive Games took the wheel for this one, and it wasn't the smoothest handoff, but it's a gorgeously nasty little co-op horror puzzle game. The recent DLC expansions have been the stronger part of the package, and those aren't in the trial — fair warning — but the base game's two-hour window is more than enough to find out if the atmosphere gets under your skin.
Rogue Waters rounds it out: a turn-based pirate tactics rougelite where you play Captain Cutter, commanding a ship and crew through procedurally generated encounters. Recruit and train crewmates, grab upgrades, fight sea monsters and rival crews. It's also sitting at a reported 75% off, which makes the trial-to-purchase math extremely friendly if you click with it.
03 ARC Raiders Headlines, Game Pass Gets Two Bonus Picks
ARC Raiders is the anchor of the weekend — Embark Studios' extraction shooter, free on all platforms, with no limit on how far you can progress. It lines up with the game's first anniversary and the Frozen Trail update, the biggest patch the game has had, adding a new map, enemies, and weapons. One timing wrinkle: Embark lists the free event as running through the end of Monday, October 12, while Xbox Wire says free access expires at the end of Sunday, October 11. Play it Sunday and you're covered either way.
The Game Pass-only pair deserves a look too. Screamer is Milestone's anime-styled arcade racer with fighting-game mechanics — imagine a Cyberpunk-toned racer with narrative beats between the high-speed sections. It's reportedly 60% off if you want to keep it. Family Man is the sleeper: a 2020 narrative RPG from Broken Bear Games where you play Joe, a man who owes very bad people a lot of money, and you have three weeks to make it right. The question the game keeps asking is how far you'll go. At a reported 85% off, it's the cheapest impulse buy of the weekend.

04 Not the Ubisoft One — Here's the Distinction
If this all feels like déjà vu, that's because Xbox already ran a Free Play Days earlier this week. We covered the Ubisoft edition this morning — that was a separate event with its own lineup, and this weekend's AAA batch is a different beast entirely. Think of the week as Xbox stacking two free weekends back to back: the first one belonged to Ubisoft's catalog, this one is the general AAA showcase. Don't confuse them, and definitely don't skip this one because you already sampled the other.
Getting in is simple: on console, open the Subscriptions tab in the Xbox store and find the Free Play Days collection; on the web, each game's store page links through to the Microsoft Store, where a signed-in account reveals the install option. Everything runs through the end of Sunday, October 11, with ARC Raiders possibly stretching into Monday depending on whose clock you believe.

05 The Discounts Are the Real Play
Here's the part people miss with Free Play Days: the trials are the hook, but the sales are the net. Stalker 2 at a reported 30% off post-2.0, Rogue Waters at 75% off, Screamer's editions at 60% off, Family Man at 85% off, and ARC Raiders half off through October 15. Play the trials this weekend, know exactly which ones are for you, and buy the ones that stick while the prices are down. That is the entire strategy, and it works.
This is also, quietly, the strongest Free Play Days in a long time. Gaming outlets have been calling it one of the best lineups in a while, and they're not wrong — a post-overhaul Stalker 2, a brand-new comedy shooter, the horror co-op everyone argued about, a pirate tactics game, and a free weekend for an extraction shooter at its biggest content drop. Whether you own Game Pass or not, there's something here with your name on it.
