Thursday means a fresh stack of free games on Xbox, and this week's Free Play Days lineup is one of the more eclectic in recent memory — a basketball giant, a medieval grand-strategy epic, a bus company simulator, two charming indies and a sci-fi survival game that asks what you would do if your crewmates were also you. According to Pure Xbox's rundown of the October 15–18 event and Xbox Wire's official announcement, six games are available to try from Thursday, October 15 through Sunday, October 18, with one scheduling quirk and one genuinely open door worth knowing about before you clear your weekend.
The headliner is NBA 2K27, and it comes with an asterisk shaped like a calendar. Pure Xbox reports that while the rest of the lineup is playable from Thursday, access to 2K27 begins Friday, October 16 at 12 p.m. PDT. Xbox Wire confirms the Friday start for the Standard Edition and notes what players can do with the weekend: build a MyPLAYER, run the streets of The City, chase a legacy in MyCAREER or run Play Now games with NBA and WNBA rosters. There is also a purchase sweetener running alongside the event: Xbox Wire says buying any digital edition of NBA 2K27 between October 16 and October 29 comes with an Xbox Gift Card and a 15,000 Virtual Currency pack.
The bigger long-term news tucked inside this freebie is about where 2K27 can be played. Pure Xbox highlights that the series is supporting Xbox Play Anywhere for the first time in its history this week, letting players move between console, PC and supported handhelds with one copy. TrueAchievements, covering the same update, adds the practical details: the Play Anywhere support arrives as a post-launch update on Friday, October 16, owners of the Xbox version get the Windows PC version at no extra cost through the Xbox PC app, achievements and progress carry across, and the arrangement works in reverse too — buy it on PC and the console copy comes with it. For a series that has historically made players double-dip, that is a real shift, and a free weekend is a shrewd way to show it off right before NBA tip-off.
The rest of the six: strategy, buses and a very good weekend for indies
Crusader Kings III is the lineup's time sink, and calling it a weekend trial is almost a prank — Paradox's medieval dynasty simulator is famous for swallowing hundreds of hours, and four free days is just enough time to marry off an heir, start a feud and understand why your friends keep talking about this game. Bus Simulator 21 Next Stop sits at the opposite pole of intensity: build a bus company, plan routes, drive the routes, and discover the peculiar calm of a well-run timetable. Both require a Game Pass membership this weekend, as do the two smaller titles that might be the weekend's best value.
Soccer Story is a story-driven soccer adventure with a puzzle-solving streak, and Ravenswatch is a co-op roguelike that retells fairy tales and legends as a dark, fast action game for up to four players. Pure Xbox notes both are heavily discounted during the event — Soccer Story at 85% off and Ravenswatch at 65% off — which makes the free weekend function the way these events should: try it properly, then keep it cheap if it clicks. Progress and achievements earned during Free Play Days carry over if you buy, per Xbox Wire, so nothing you unlock this weekend is wasted.
The Alters is free for everyone — all three hours of it
The most interesting slot in the lineup belongs to The Alters, 11 bit studios' survival game about a lone worker who survives by creating altered copies of himself, each shaped by a different life choice. Xbox Wire is explicit that its three-hour timed trial, running October 15–18, is open to all players with no Game Pass membership required — the only title in this batch with the door fully open. Pure Xbox adds that The Alters is also discounted by 55% during the event. Three hours is a tight window for a game built on base management and branching conversations, so treat it as a first chapter rather than a demo lap: the opening stretch is widely considered the hook, and the trial is long enough to meet the first alter and feel the premise land.
Housekeeping, so nobody wastes a download: the five Game Pass-gated games are available to Ultimate, Premium and Essential members, per Xbox Wire, and on console you will find them in the Free Play Days collection under the Subscriptions tab of the Xbox Store. Everything switches off late Sunday, October 18. Our advice? Queue the downloads tonight, start with The Alters while the trial clock is generous, and save 2K27 for Friday at noon Pacific — by then, the Play Anywhere update will be live and your MyPLAYER can follow you from the couch to the PC.
