Portland had not won in seven matches, and for most of Saturday night at Providence Park it looked like that run might stretch to eight in the most painful way available. The Timbers conceded in the third minute, led by halftime, were pulled back level in the 69th minute — and then won the game on its last play, with a header from a substitute who had been on the field for 13 minutes.
Charlotte arrived knowing a win or a draw would clinch an Eastern Conference playoff berth. Portland arrived 11th in the Western Conference on 37 points — and produced 27 shots, a season high for the club per the Timbers, without ever making the finish comfortable.
Charlotte strikes in three minutes
The visitors scored with the game's first real attack. Ashley Westwood played the ball wide and Pep Biel dribbled down the wing, cut inside and fired a left-footed shot from outside the box into the far corner in the 3rd minute. It was 1-0 Charlotte before Providence Park had settled, and the playoff clinch was, for the moment, on schedule.
Portland's answer took eight minutes. Ronald Hernández played the ball into the right side of the box, Eric Izoita delivered a cut-back cross near the penalty area, and Ariel Lassiter finished first time — a left-footed shot from the centre of the box to the high centre of the goal in the 11th minute.
The pair were not done. Eric Izoita was booked in the 17th minute, but his influence on the game only grew: in the 40th minute he combined with Lassiter in a give-and-go at the edge of the box, and Lassiter slotted a left-footed shot from the right side of the box into the bottom left corner. Portland led 2-1 at halftime, Nathan Byrne's yellow card in the 45th minute closing a first half the home side had turned on its head.
Toklomati drags it back
Portland kept pushing after the break — the shot count kept climbing toward 27-6 — but Charlotte's substitutions changed the temperature. Luca de la Torre came on in the 62nd minute, and seven minutes later Portland rebuilt its lead-chasers: Ian Smith replaced Jimer Fory and Cole Bassett replaced Izoita in the 64th minute.
The equaliser came in the 69th. De la Torre played the ball in from outside the box and found Idan Toklomati at the back post, who finished from very close range to make it 2-2. The Timbers' official scoring summary credits the goal to Toklomati with assists from de la Torre and Biel. At 2-2, Charlotte had the draw that clinched — and held it for 27 minutes.
They nearly lost it in the 87th. Kristijan Kahlina stopped Ronald Hernández's shot and then got up off the ground to deny David Da Costa on the rebound, a double save that kept the clinch in Charlotte's hands into stoppage time.
Aravena, at the death
The fifth minute of stoppage time brought one more Portland corner. The sixth brought the winner.
Ian Smith swung the corner in from the right side. Cole Bassett got his head on it and headed it on toward goal — ESPN's play-by-play shows a Bassett header blocked in the same sequence — and Alexander Aravena, who had replaced Vincent Janssen in the 83rd minute, got his head on the ball at the goal line and headed it in from very close range to the centre of the goal. Portland 3, Charlotte 2, at 90'+6'. One minute later, the second half and the match ended.
Aravena's winner was built entirely by substitutes: Smith took the corner, Bassett — on since the 64th minute — headed it on, and Aravena finished it. The Timbers' release credits Bassett's flick as his eighth assist of the season, a single-season career best, and Smith's corner as his first goal contribution of the season.
What it means
For Portland, the win ends a seven-match winless streak (0-4-3, per Field Level Media) and moves the Timbers to 10-14-7 on 37 points, still 11th in the West but within three points of the final playoff spot, held by the LA Galaxy on 40 points. Lassiter's goals were his second career MLS brace, his first for Portland, and took him to a career-best seven on the season (per the club); Izoita, an academy product in his sixth MLS appearance, now has four goal contributions (one goal, three assists). Portland travels to St. Louis CITY SC on Wednesday, Oct. 28.
For Charlotte, 13-10-8 on 47 points, the arithmetic is brutal: they led after three minutes, were level with stoppage time to survive, and lost the clinch on the final play. They host CF Montreal on Wednesday with the berth still available — but not banked.
