FX Renews American Horror Story for Season 14, One Week Before the Season 13 Finale

Thirteen seasons in, the anthology just posted the biggest streaming launch of Ryan Murphy's career — and FX answered the only way that made sense. Season 14 is ordered, announced a week before the Season 13 finale, and it is the show's first renewal in nearly seven years.

The coven is not done yet. FX has renewed American Horror Story for a fourteenth season, announcing the pickup on Tuesday, October 20, 2026 — a little more than a week before the Season 13 finale airs on Thursday, October 29. The renewal, reported by Bloody Disgusting from FX's announcement and covered by TV Guide and Blex Media, ends one of the longest stretches of uncertainty in the franchise's history: it is the show's first renewal in nearly seven years.

That last detail is the one that tells you how unusual this moment is. The previous renewal came in January 2020, when FX ordered Seasons 11, 12 and 13 in a single three-season pickup — a vote of confidence so large it carried the anthology deep into the decade. Since then, the future of the series created by Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk has been an open question that FX declined to answer season by season. Season 14's order closes that question, at least for now, and it does so at the exact moment the current season is making the strongest possible case for the show's continued existence.

A renewal earned by the numbers

FX did not renew a nostalgia act; it renewed a performer. According to FX, the Season 13 premiere was Ryan Murphy's biggest launch ever on Hulu and Disney+, based on the first four days of views — a remarkable claim for a series that premiered in 2011, in a television era that no longer exists. The season also landed in Nielsen's Streaming Top 10, the chart that has become the industry's most public scoreboard for whether a show is actually being watched or merely being marketed.

Read those two facts together and the timing of the announcement stops looking sentimental and starts looking obvious. Networks renew leverage, and Season 13 gave American Horror Story fresh leverage: a launch big enough to brag about in a press release, and third-party measurement, from Nielsen, backing the brag up. TV Guide's coverage of the renewal framed it the same way — this is a franchise that just posted one of the strongest openings of its life, thirteen seasons in.

Season 13 still has three episodes to air

The renewal lands mid-run, which means the celebration comes with homework for viewers who are behind. Season 13 is a New York City crossover event centered on a building called The Apollyon — the kind of full-franchise gathering that anthology television rarely attempts, weaving characters and threads from across the show's long history into one event storyline. Its cast is a roll call of the series' defining players: Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters, Angela Bassett, Kathy Bates, Emma Roberts and Jessica Lange.

Episodes 11 and 12 air this Thursday, October 22, and the finale follows on Thursday, October 29, at 9 p.m. ET/PT on FX, with episodes streaming on Hulu. That scheduling detail matters for how you read the renewal: FX is not waiting to see how the finale performs before committing. The decision is already made, announced while the season's biggest episodes are still in front of it — which also means the finale now plays differently. It is no longer a possible series ending. It is a handoff.

The longest-running hour in FX history

Context helps here, because American Horror Story is no longer just a hit show; it is a piece of network history. It is the longest-running hour-long series in FX history, a run that began in 2011 and has now been extended into a fourteenth season. Across that run, the series has collected more than 100 Emmy nominations and 17 wins — the kind of awards footprint that most dramas never approach, sustained across an anthology format that reinvents its setting, its story and much of its tone every single year.

The anthology structure is precisely why the show has been able to do this. A conventional drama ages with its premise; American Horror Story swaps its premise out. One year it is a haunted house, another a coven, another a circus, a hotel, a cult, a summer camp. The returning company of actors — Paulson, Peters, Bassett, Bates, Roberts, Lange and their colleagues across the years — provides the continuity, playing new characters against new nightmares while the audience's loyalty attaches to the troupe rather than to any single storyline. Season 13's crossover twist, gathering that troupe in New York around The Apollyon, is the format celebrating its own history. Season 14 will get to start fresh again, which is the whole point of the machine Murphy and Falchuk built.

What we do not know about Season 14

Here is the honest part of the story, stated plainly: FX has announced no theme, no cast and no premiere date for Season 14. Anyone telling you what the new season is about, who is in it, or when it arrives is guessing. Anthology seasons live and die on the reveal of their theme, and FX and Murphy have historically guarded those reveals carefully, so expect the information to arrive on the production's schedule, not the internet's.

What can be said is what the pattern suggests and nothing more: the repertory company that powers Season 13 is the obvious place to watch, the show's Hulu and Disney+ performance gives FX every reason to keep the streaming window central, and the nearly seven-year gap since the last renewal makes this pickup a deliberate recommitment rather than a routine one. Blex Media's coverage noted the same significance — after the 2020 three-season order ran its course, there was no guarantee of a fourteenth year at all. Now there is.

How to watch the road to the finale

If you are catching up: Season 13's remaining episodes air Thursdays on FX at 9 p.m. ET/PT — episodes 11 and 12 on October 22, the finale on October 29 — and stream on Hulu. The full run of earlier seasons is available on Hulu and Disney+, which is where that record-setting Season 13 premiere launch happened. However Season 14 eventually takes shape, it will arrive with something no new show can buy: thirteen seasons of proof that the audience shows up.
