LOS ANGELES (FICTIONAL)
A decade in, 9-1-1 does not do quiet returns. The Season 10 premiere airs tonight at 8/7c on ABC, and per the network's episode description, the 118 faces an earth-shattering emergency that shakes the city of Los Angeles to its core. Previews of the episode go further: a sinkhole opens downtown and starts turning volcanic, which is exactly the kind of impossible Tuesday this show has built ten seasons on.
The premiere picks up from the Season 9 finale, which aired in May, and it is as much a reset as a disaster movie. Athena Grant, played by Angela Bassett, is still finding her footing as a detective after last season's turn, and the opener gives her a mysterious new case to work by instinct while the ground is quite literally moving under the rest of the cast. Bassett remains the franchise's center of gravity, and the show knows it: the personal storyline with the badge gets equal billing with the citywide emergency in ABC's own description of the episode.
May Grant gets the other big personal beat. Corinne Massiah's character finds her own confidence in a new job in the premiere, a storyline the show has been building toward as May steps out of the call center's shadow and into her own lane. Around them, the 118's family board is full: Oliver Stark's Buck is settling into life as legal guardian to young Theo, a responsibility he took on last season, with Ryan Guzman's Eddie in his corner. Jennifer Love Hewitt returns as Maddie Han, Aisha Hinds as Hen Wilson, Kenneth Choi as Chimney Han, and Elijah M. Cooper as Harry Grant.
The series, created by Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk and Tim Minear, has now outlasted its original network run and become the anchor of ABC's Thursday night. The scheduling tells the story: tonight's premiere leads a full franchise block, with 9-1-1: Nashville returning for Season 2 at 9/7c and Grey's Anatomy opening Season 23 at 10/9c. ABC is betting the whole evening on big-ensemble, big-emergency television, and 9-1-1 is the show carrying the top of the hour.
What has kept the formula alive for ten seasons is the mix. The emergencies are enormous and proudly implausible, but the show grounds them in characters whose lives keep changing between calls: a detective learning a new job, a daughter finding confidence in hers, a firefighter learning how to be a guardian. "That Sinking Feeling" puts all three of those threads in play in a single hour, with Los Angeles itself as the fourth.
Season 10 premieres tonight, Thursday, October 15 at 8/7c on ABC. Episodes stream the next day on Hulu, and the show's full run lives on its Previously title page. Ten seasons in, the 118 still answers.
