Netflix Just Gave Lady Violet Her Own Bridgerton Spinoff — and Shonda Rhimes Is Running It

The untitled limited series will follow young Violet’s early life and her romance with Viscount Edmund Bridgerton, with Rhimes and Nicholas Nardini writing and showrunning. It’s the franchise’s second spinoff after Queen Charlotte — and the one fans have been asking for.

Dearest gentle reader, Netflix finally listened. The streamer and Shondaland announced this morning that Lady Violet Bridgerton — the matriarch, the advice-dispenser, the woman holding the entire chaotic family together — is getting her own limited series: an untitled prequel chronicling young Violet’s early life and her romance with Viscount Edmund Bridgerton, the love story that started it all.

It’s the second Bridgerton spinoff after 2023’s Queen Charlotte, the six-part prequel tracing young Charlotte’s (India Amarteifio and Golda Rosheuvel) romance with King George (Corey Mylchreest and James Fleet). And it’s the one fans have been asking for for years — Violet’s backstory has been the franchise’s most-requested untold story since the flagship series premiered in 2020.

The team behind it

The creative lineup is the strongest possible signal about how seriously Netflix is taking this. Shonda Rhimes and Nicholas Nardini will write the series and serve as showrunners and executive producers, per Entertainment Weekly. Nardini produced Queen Charlotte and wrote on Rhimes’ ABC hit Scandal, per Parade (via Variety). Tom Verica — a longtime Shondaland director who worked on Queen Charlotte — will direct and executive produce alongside Betsy Beers. When Rhimes personally co-writes and showruns, it’s a statement: this isn’t a brand extension handed to the B-team.

The big question: who plays young Violet?

Here’s what we know about the characters. Ruth Gemmell plays the present-day Lady Violet in the flagship series; Rupert Evans played Viscount Edmund in the original run, per USA Today. Young Violet already exists in the franchise: Connie Jenkins-Greig portrayed her in Queen Charlotte — though, as Just Jared noted, she had not yet met Edmund in that story. Whether Jenkins-Greig returns for the new series is unconfirmed; Netflix hasn’t announced any casting. The smart money says they keep her — continuity is the whole point of a prequel — but Edmund is the trickier recast, and that’s the casting announcement everyone will be watching for.

Why Violet, why now

Rhimes has been circling this idea publicly for months. On Craig Melvin’s Glass Half Full podcast in March, she said: “I’ve always said that I thought if we were going to do something like that, Violet would be a great person to tell the story about… That’s a possibility.” (EW) The flagship series has been laying the groundwork too: season 4, released in January and February 2026, gave the widowed Violet her own romantic arc with Lord Marcus Anderson (Daniel Francis) — an engagement she ultimately broke off in the finale. “I have been a wife and a mother for so long I have lost perspective entirely on who I was before that,” Violet told Marcus, per USA Today. “I am only just starting to get reacquainted with that part of myself, my carefree, wild self.” And Radio Times noted that the season 4 finale had Violet telling Benedict (Luke Thompson) she saw much of herself in him — when asked if that pointed at a spinoff, showrunner Jess Brownell answered, “That’s up to Shonda!” Turns out it was.

The franchise keeps expanding

The announcement lands with the Bridgerton machine at full speed. Season 5 is currently filming in London and will follow Francesca Bridgerton (Hannah Dodd) in a second-chance romance with Michaela Stirling (Masali Baduza), per Parade — and Netflix already renewed the flagship for season 6. Season 4 premiered at No. 1 on Netflix’s Global English TV list and reached the Top 10 in 92 countries, per Netflix Tudum (via Parade). Series author Julia Quinn confirmed the spinoff on social media with a Lady Whistledown-style note declaring that “the love match that started it all shall soon be yours to see,” per Pinkvilla.

The Queen Charlotte template is instructive: the six-part prequel won an Emmy and became one of Netflix’s most talked-about limited series of 2023, proving the franchise can thrive without the flagship’s season-long courtship structure. A Violet-and-Edmund romance has an even cleaner runway — no existing book to adapt around, no sibling season to service, just the origin story of the family itself. Netflix hasn’t announced a release window, and with season 5 still filming in London, a 2027 arrival is the earliest realistic bet.
