Câmara's Debut Comes Early, and It Comes at Home

Haas have told Esteban Ocon he will not race for them again this season. The seat goes to Rafael Câmara — the 21-year-old Formula 2 points leader — who makes his Formula 1 debut this weekend at Interlagos, his home Grand Prix.

Rafael Câmara was supposed to wait until 2027. Instead, the Brazilian makes his Formula 1 race debut this weekend at Interlagos — his home Grand Prix — after Haas confirmed on Tuesday that Esteban Ocon will not return to a race seat this season.

The seat opened in Mexico City. Ocon, who had already announced he was leaving Haas at the end of the season, was replaced there by reserve driver Ryo Hirakawa, who finished 10th and scored a point in his first race for the team. Hirakawa has World Endurance Championship commitments this weekend, and rather than hand the seat back, Haas closed the Ocon chapter for good.

"We have now notified Esteban Ocon that he will not return to a race seat with TGR Haas F1 Team this season," team principal Ayao Komatsu said. "Looking ahead, we've chosen Rafael Camara to drive alongside Ollie Bearman at the Sao Paulo Grand Prix. Having excelled in his TPC outing in August, we know Rafa's capabilities and we're looking forward to working with him through his Formula 1 debut."

Câmara, 21 and from Recife, is a Ferrari Driver Academy driver who leads the Formula 2 championship with Invicta Racing, seven points clear of Nikola Tsolov with two rounds to go. He won the Formula 3 title last year and the Formula Regional European Championship the year before. Haas had already signed him for 2027, announcing the deal in October — the debut has simply moved up a few months, and landed on the one weekend he would have picked himself.

He gets the full weekend: practice Friday, qualifying Saturday, and the race on Sunday at Interlagos (9 a.m. PT). Haas sit seventh in the constructors' standings, four points ahead of Audi, so the debut comes with real work attached — and with his F2 title fight still waiting for him in Qatar and Abu Dhabi.

The Sports Desk's read: Haas could have run out the season and waited for 2027 like the plan said. Instead the debut lands at Interlagos, in front of his own crowd — and the Ocon era ends not with a farewell tour but with a Tuesday statement. More racing coverage is on the Previously Sports front.
