Twenty years after Dexter Morgan first appeared on television, he is coming back for Halloween weekend — older, in need of reading glasses, and, for the first time, not the most talked-about killer in his own city. Dexter: Resurrection Season 2 premieres Friday, October 30 on Paramount+ with the Premium plan, the streamer confirmed, with Michael C. Hall returning as the serial killer who kills serial killers. The official trailer, released October 1, sets up the season's hook in one line: Dexter is caught between two killers, and both of them are getting the attention he never could.

On one side is Brian Cox, joining as a series regular in the role of Don Framt, better known as the New York Ripper — an infamous murderer with decades of notoriety behind him who has found a new way to torment the survivors of his victims, according to Paramount+ and trailer coverage from Deadline and TV Insider. On the other is Dan Stevens as the Five Borough Killer, a younger killer making his name across New York in the manner of the Zodiac case, taunting police and then following through. Entertainment Weekly's first look framed the pairing as the season's engine: one killer older than Dexter, one younger, and Dexter in the middle having what showrunner Clyde Phillips calls a midlife crisis.

A three-year jump puts a badge between father and son

The season does not pick up where Season 1 left off. EW's September 8 first look reported that Season 2 jumps ahead three years, a choice Phillips confirmed was made for one practical reason: Harrison Morgan, played by Jack Alcott, needed to turn 21 — old enough to join the NYPD. Harrison now wears the uniform of the department hunting the same killers his father hunts, while continuing to pursue his own version of justice. It is the franchise's most loaded arrangement yet: the son inside the investigation, the father outside it, and a family history Harrison now knows in full.

Dexter's own arc leans into the calendar. The trailer shows him at the optometrist and reflecting on a life spent blending in as he enters his 50s — a vigilante whose problem is no longer just staying hidden, but being overlooked. Phillips told EW that middle age is one of the season's themes, down to Dexter needing glasses because he can no longer read his phone. The joke lands because the threat around it is real: the Five Borough Killer's growing fame visibly irritates a man who has spent two decades making sure nobody knows his name.

The returns nobody can quite explain

Uma Thurman is back as Charley, reunited with Dexter after the events of Season 1, and the rest of the returning ensemble is deep: James Remar as Harry Morgan, Desmond Harrington as Lt. Joey Quinn — a thread tying the New York series back to Dexter's Miami past — plus Ntare Guma Mbaho Mwine, Kadia Saraf and Dominic Fumusa. Bokeem Woodbine and Nona Parker Johnson join as series regulars. Two guest returns, though, are the ones fans keep circling. Eric Stonestreet is back as Al Walker, known as Rapunzel — the one killer from Season 1 who walked out of Dexter's orbit alive. And Krysten Ritter returns as Mia LaPierre, "Lady Vengeance," whose apparent fate last season left her survival an open question the new season pointedly declines to answer in advance. Asked by EW how Mia could be back, Phillips offered only that this is Dexter, after all. Gabriel Luna also guest-stars this season as Ray Ballard, the Sleepy-Eyed Stranger, a third new killer in Dexter's path.

NYCC fans have already seen the premiere

The rollout has been built like an anniversary celebration, because it is one: the original Dexter debuted on Showtime on October 1, 2006. On October 8, the series took over New York Comic Con's Main Stage, where Hall, Thurman, Remar, Alcott, Woodbine and Ritter appeared with Phillips and fellow executive producers Scott Reynolds and Marcos Siega — and Stonestreet arrived as a surprise guest to announce his return. Then the panel did the thing panels almost never do: it screened the entire Season 2 premiere episode for the room, three weeks early, with reviews held until the end of the month. Broadway World and The Futon Critic both reported the surprise screening, and a 20th anniversary museum experience ran in New York the same weekend.

Season 1 is streaming now on the Paramount+ Premium plan for anyone catching up, and it is worth the binge: as our Yaga preview noted, the modern antihero-thriller template that shows like it are built on runs straight back to Dexter. Season 2 arrives October 30, one day before Halloween, in the slot the franchise has effectively owned for two decades. Two rival killers, a son with a badge, a killer who may not have died, and a midlife crisis with a body count — Previously will have the premiere covered when it drops. Until then, our weekend watch guide has the rest of this week's television covered.
