Two of independent media's loudest franchises are merging their Friday. Don Lemon and Jennifer Welch will co-host The Weekend Read, a new weekly show announced October 15 by Lemon Media Network and I've Had It Podcast Media, premiering Friday, October 16 on the I've Had It YouTube channel and on Lemon's Substack, according to the announcement carried by EIN Presswire and syndicated by multiple outlets.
Strip away the personalities and this is a media-business story about how audiences are actually assembled in 2026. Neither host works for a network anymore in the traditional sense. Lemon, who spent 17 years at CNN before building The Don Lemon Show under his own Lemon Media Network banner, owns his distribution. Welch built I've Had It from an Oklahoma City interior-design career into one of the most clipped, quoted and argued-with podcasts in the country, and her operation — IHIP Media — controls its own YouTube channel, which is where the new show will live. The Weekend Read is what it looks like when two owner-operators decide a shared Friday slot is worth more than another solo episode.
How the pairing happened
According to the EIN Presswire announcement, the show grew out of reciprocal guest appearances: Lemon and Welch kept appearing on each other's programs, the chemistry kept working, and the two companies decided to formalize it as a standing weekly franchise. Welch described ending her week with Lemon as a palate cleanser and said the pair are aiming to be in everyone's ears every weekend. Lemon framed the timing from the audience's side — Friday is when people finally have room to digest a week of headlines, and the show is built to be that digest.
The format, per the announcement, is a weekly breakdown of the biggest stories in politics and pop culture, plus the gossip and headlines carrying into the weekend, with the hosts presenting the show as an anything-goes read of the week. The launch window is deliberate: the series starts in the final weeks before the November 3 midterm elections, and the announcement states plainly that it will continue weekly after Election Day — this is a permanent slot being claimed, not an election-season special that evaporates in November.
Why Friday, why video, why two platforms
The scheduling is the strategy. Weekend listening and viewing behaves differently from the weekday news grind: audiences catch up, rewatch and share, and a Friday show positioned as the week's wrap-up gets to define the conversation heading into Saturday and Sunday rather than chasing it. Putting the show on the I've Had It YouTube channel puts it in front of Welch's existing video audience from episode one, while Lemon's Substack gives the franchise a written, subscriber-owned home that no algorithm change can take away. Video discovery on one side, direct subscription on the other — it is the standard two-legged structure of modern independent media, executed by two people who each already own one of the legs.
For our podcast library readers, the move also fits the pattern visible across the industry this year: established shows are becoming networks, and networks are programming lineups rather than feeds. IHIP Media already publishes more than Welch's flagship conversations, and Lemon Media Network has been building a slate around Lemon himself. A co-hosted weekly franchise gives both companies a second marquee property to sell, promote and clip — and gives each host a weekly introduction to the other's audience, which is the cheapest growth either of them will ever buy.
What to watch when it premieres
The first episode arrives Friday, October 16, and the useful questions are business questions. Does the show run as a true two-hander, or as alternating segments in each host's voice? How much of the hour is politics, how much is the pop culture and gossip the announcement promises alongside it? And how aggressively will the two networks clip it — because for shows in this tier, the episode is increasingly the raw material and the clips are the product that travels.
There is also a durability test built into the announcement itself. Launching three weeks before a midterm guarantees an opening audience of people already mainlining political content. Continuing after Election Day, as promised, means holding that audience when the stakes drop — which is precisely why the pop-culture half of the format matters. A show that can pivot from a Senate race to a celebrity feud without changing chairs has a reason to exist in December, not just October.
Lemon and Welch are, on paper, an unusually complementary pairing for that job: a career broadcast journalist who has interviewed presidents, and a podcaster whose whole brand is saying the unfiltered version out loud. The Weekend Read premieres Friday on the I've Had It YouTube channel and Don Lemon's Substack, with new episodes every Friday. Previously will track the launch in our news feed — and if the first episode makes news, as both hosts tend to ensure, we will cover that too.
