EA Opened a Vault of Forgotten Master Tapes — and 25 Classics Came Back

Twenty-five EA classics hit Steam this week for the first time. Seven of them only exist because a producer found a floor-to-ceiling vault of master tapes in 2022 — and a small team spent years rebuilding the movies inside them frame by frame.

Twenty-five games from EA's back catalog are on Steam this week for the first time — and seven of them are back in a way nobody had a right to expect. EA said the Anniversary Editions of Road Rash and six Wing Commander titles were restored from the original master tapes, after a producer found those tapes sitting in a physical media vault at the company's Redwood Shores campus.

EA announced the wave on November 5: 25 classic PC games, available now on Steam for the first time, alongside GOG and the EA App. Seven carry the full Anniversary Edition treatment — Road Rash in its 1996 PC form, and Wing Commander, Wing Commander II: Vengeance of the Kilrathi, Wing Commander III: Heart of the Tiger, Wing Commander IV: The Price of Freedom, Wing Commander Prophecy and Privateer 2: The Darkening. The other 18 arrive as faithful ports, including eleven Ultima titles — Ultima I through IX and both Ultima Underworld games — plus the two Crusader games, Theme Hospital, Strike Commander, Privateer, Academy and Armada.

The room nobody opened

The restoration started with a discovery. In March 2022, EA senior producer Jim Vessella was at Redwood Shores when the team came across a vast physical media vault — floor-to-ceiling shelves holding almost 20,000 archival assets, from broadcast tapes and film reels to hard drives and development kits. Among them were master tapes for Wing Commander and Road Rash: the source material for the games' full-motion video, shot on real sets in the 1990s with real actors — Mark Hamill, Malcolm McDowell and John Rhys-Davies among them in Wing Commander IV's case.

That matters because of what the 1990s did to that footage. Wing Commander III's cinematics were originally squeezed into heavily compressed 240p video to fit onto CD-ROMs. Working from the master tapes, the team digitized the archive — EA said about 2,500 hours of historical footage has been preserved — and re-edited the games' cinematics frame by frame, more than 1,500 scenes across the seven Anniversary Editions. The new editions let players choose how to watch them: the original CD-ROM video, the digitized masters as they are, or upscaled.

One set of tapes was in an attic

Not everything was in the vault. TechSpot reported that by April of this year the team had digitized about 6,000 of the archive's items — and that the one big gap, Privateer 2's master tapes, turned up somewhere else entirely: in the attic of the game's original cinematics director, who had kept the full set. The most corporate archive project imaginable was finished by a box in somebody's house.

The restorations were also built with help from the Wing Commander community, whose long-maintained fan patches are bundled into the new editions. RPG Site reported from EA's release materials that the Anniversary Editions list at $9.99 each and the straight ports at $4.99, with special launch pricing running on Steam and GOG through November 19. Anyone who already owned the Wing Commander games on GOG or the EA App gets the Anniversary upgrades free.

The receipts here are not really the prices or the ports — they are the tapes. The most famous space opera on the PC survived because somebody kept the film, and because in 2022 somebody finally opened the room it was sitting in. Preservation is usually an accident; this time it got a product launch.
