Coroner Rules 8 Erie Deaths Homicides, Shooter’s Death a Suicide — as New Details Emerge About the Nine Dead

Erie County Coroner Lyell Cook ruled the eight victims’ deaths homicides and the suspected shooter’s death a suicide a day after nine people were found dead in and around a Perry Street home. Eight of the nine were related, including the shooter; one of the dead was eight months pregnant.

Erie County Coroner Lyell Cook ruled the eight victims’ deaths homicides and the suspected shooter’s death a suicide, a day after nine people were found dead in and around a home on Perry Street in east Erie. The ruling, reported by GoErie from the city’s October 10 update, is the first formal finding in what is now one of the deadliest mass killings Pennsylvania has seen in years — and it landed as officials began to fill in the outline of a family nearly wiped out in a single afternoon.

02 The coroner’s ruling: eight homicides, one suicide

The formal findings came from the Erie County coroner’s office on Saturday. Eight deaths were ruled homicides; the ninth — the 45-year-old suspected shooter found on the home’s second floor — was ruled a suicide, according to GoErie’s reporting from the city’s October 10 briefing. The coroner’s ruling does not name anyone; Coroner Lyell Cook said that morning his office was just starting the process of confirming the identities of the deceased.

All but one of the victims were pronounced dead at the scene, and one was sent to the hospital and pronounced dead there, Cook said. The victims’ names, ages and sexes had not been released as of Saturday morning, and officials said more details would come at the city’s 4 PM press conference at Erie City Hall.

Eight of the nine dead were related to one another — including the suspected shooter — and the ninth was a family friend, officials said. One of the dead was eight months pregnant. Friday’s original coverage of the shooting reported nine dead including two children; Saturday’s update added the ages — a 5-year-old boy and a 1-year-old girl — and the family connection that makes this killing what it is: almost an entire family, gone in minutes.

03 How Friday afternoon unfolded on Perry Street

Erie Bureau of Police officers arrived in the 700 block of Perry Street, near East Seventh Street in east Erie, within minutes of an alert from the city’s ShotSpotter gunshot detection system, according to city officials and GoErie. Police Chief Rick Lorah said the department received a report at 4:52 PM Friday of shots fired and of people shot, and investigators later determined that all of the deaths occurred before officers arrived on scene.

The first officers to reach the block found two women mortally wounded outside the residence with gunshot wounds to the head and face, Lorah said. A neighbor reported seeing the suspect shooting at the two women, and the man the neighbor described matched the description of the 45-year-old found dead inside the house. The Associated Press reported that the two women had appeared distressed before the shooting — pacing back and forth outside and seeking help from neighbors.

No shots were fired after police arrived, officials stressed. Sounds that may have been mistaken for gunfire were flash bangs from law enforcement’s tactical response. Officers deployed a drone and a robot before entering the home, seeking a search warrant while they assessed whether the suspected shooter remained inside or posed an ongoing threat.

04 What officers found inside the house

Inside, officers found a scene Chief Lorah described as a horrific scene unlike anything he and other officers in the city police force had ever seen. The Associated Press reported the layout of what officers encountered: a 5-year-old boy and a 1-year-old girl on the first floor; two women and two young men in a stairwell; and the suspected shooter on the second floor, found with a gun, dead of what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

“Some scenes stay with you long after you leave them. This is one of those tragic scenes,” Lorah said. He refused to describe what officers saw inside the home: “Out of respect for the victims and the families, I will not discuss the details of what our officers encountered inside that home.”

Erie County District Attorney Elizabeth Hirz said her office is working with Erie police on the investigation. Investigators continued processing the scene for evidence Saturday and were still interviewing neighbors, Lorah said. No information was immediately released on whether police found any other weapons in the house.

05 A family nearly wiped out — and the question nobody can answer

The human shape of the tragedy sharpened Saturday. Eight of the nine dead were related — including the suspected shooter — and the ninth was a family friend. Among them: the 5-year-old boy and the 1-year-old girl, two young men, several women, and a woman who was eight months pregnant. Reuters and USA Today both carried the details from the October 10 briefings as the city tried to answer residents’ questions while holding back the graphic specifics.

Authorities had not commented as of Saturday morning on a possible motive, or on the nature of the relationship between the suspected gunman and the others killed beyond the family connection. The 45-year-old man was identified by police through information from the neighbor who saw him shooting the two women outside — but his name was not released, and the coroner’s office cautioned that even the victims’ identities were still being confirmed.

That leaves the central question unanswered: why. Nothing officials said Saturday offered an explanation for how a family gathering — or whatever brought these nine people to the same house — ended with nine dead, including two small children.

06 The governor, the mayor, and the city’s plea

Gov. Josh Shapiro weighed in on X, saying he had spoken with Erie Mayor Daria Devlin and offered the full support of his administration. The shooting meant, he wrote, “killing nine of our fellow Pennsylvanians.” “My heart breaks for this family. Lori and I are praying for their loved ones and the entire Erie community,” the governor wrote.

Devlin praised the officers who answered the call: they “arrived at a horrific scene, faced unimaginable circumstances, and carried out their duties with courage and professionalism.”

The city also issued a plea to the public. In its October 10 release, officials said they understood residents had questions about the circumstances, including the timeline — but asked the community to exercise care in sharing information. “Unverified reports and speculation can deepen the pain experienced by grieving families, create unnecessary fear, and potentially put responding officers and members of the public at risk,” the statement read. Anyone wanting to speak with a crisis counselor was directed to Crisis Services at 814-456-2024.

07 What we still don’t know

The unanswered list heading into Sunday is long. The shooter’s name. A motive. The precise relationships among the nine dead. What weapons were used, and whether anything beyond the shooter’s gun was recovered. Whether the coroner will order autopsies — Cook had not said as of Saturday morning.

What is established is grim enough. And there is a dark piece of context from the same GoErie reporting: this is the second homicide case involving multiple victims in Erie so far this year. On March 29, three young children were pulled by firefighters from a burning second-floor apartment on East 26th Street; two were pronounced dead at the hospital and the third died days later in Pittsburgh. The children’s mother was charged with third-degree murder and remains in the Erie County Prison awaiting a formal arraignment scheduled for October 15.

The 700 block of Perry Street stayed quiet Saturday morning — the only sound, GoErie reported, the idling engines of police cruisers still holding the block as a crime scene. The investigators’ work continues. The family’s does too, now in grief, while Erie waits to learn the names of the dead.
