Fortnite's Hollow Knight Bundle Costs More Than the Actual Game — and the Math Checks Out

You can buy all of Hollow Knight for $14.99. Or you can buy a little ghost that follows you around Fortnite for at least $17.98. Fortnite's new Hollow Knight Sidekick landed in the Item Shop on October 7, and the price math is the part everyone is talking about.

The Short Version

Fortnitemares got a little ghost from Hallownest this week, and the internet immediately did what the internet always does with a Fortnite collaboration: it pulled out a calculator. The Hollow Knight bundle landed in the Item Shop on October 7, and yes, it is genuinely cool — but the real story is the receipt. The Knight doesn't show up as a playable skin. He shows up as a Sidekick, a little companion who trails your character around the battlefield, and buying him costs more than buying the actual game he's from.

Let's be clear about what Epic built here, because the Sidekick system is the whole ballgame. Your Sidekick is a cosmetic companion that floats along beside you in matches — not a character you play as. The Knight Sidekick runs 1,500 V-Bucks and comes stacked: the Knight's Bench emote, the Shade Soul style, a banner, and an emoji. The Knight's Nail Pickaxe — because of course the Nail is a pickaxe — goes for 800 V-Bucks. And the Hallownest Grub Back Bling, a Grub sealed in a glass jar that reacts when you get an elimination, crack open a chest, or get knocked, is 400 V-Bucks. Grab everything together and the full bundle is 2,000 V-Bucks, discounted from 2,700. You have until October 14 at 8 PM ET before it rotates out of the shop.

The math that broke everyone's brain

Here's where it gets funny. The V-Bucks price tags are fiction until you convert them to dollars, and as Insider Gaming broke down on October 8, the conversion is rigged in the oldest way in the free-to-play playbook: you cannot buy exactly the amount of V-Bucks you need. The Sidekick costs 1,500 V-Bucks, and your options are two 800-V-Buck packs at $8.99 each — $17.98 total, leaving you with 100 leftover V-Bucks — or the 2,400-V-Buck bundle at $22.99. Want the full 2,000-V-Buck bundle? That's the $22.99 pack, minimum. There is no $15.00 option. There is never a $15.00 option.

Now line that up against the actual games. Hollow Knight — the whole thing, the masterpiece, dozens of hours of one of the best metroidvanias ever made — costs $14.99 on Steam. Hollow Knight: Silksong costs $19.99. So the little companion in Fortnite costs you at least $17.98, more than the game itself. And the full bundle? At $22.99, it costs more than both games combined would have a few years ago, and more than Silksong today. You're paying full-game money for a sidekick, a pickaxe, and a bug in a jar.

Look, Fortnite has always priced its collaborations at a premium — that's the business model, and millions of players are clearly fine with it. But there's something darkly perfect about this specific math. Hollow Knight is the poster child for the idea that a small team selling a brilliant game at a fair price can win. Team Cherry charged $15 and gave people a world. Epic is charging $18 for the privilege of having that world's protagonist follow you around somebody else's battle royale. The numbers aren't wrong. They're just rude.

What the Sidekick actually does

For the players who are buying anyway — and plenty are — this isn't a static cosmetic. The Sidekick system has a progression layer: Sidekick Points unlock bonus rewards as you play, including the Shade Soul style and the Knight's Bench emote, which has you and the Knight taking a seat on a bench while music plays. If you know, you know: benches are Hallownest's save points, the little islands of rest in a brutal underground world, and turning one into a Fortnite emote is the kind of deep-cut detail that tells you somebody at Epic actually played the game.

The Hollow Knight Sidekick also plugs into the event machinery. It counts toward Fortnitemares 2026 quests, earning XP for both you and your Sidekick, and during the event players can extract Trick or Treat Sprites — the seasonal collectible loop layered on top of everything else happening this month. Your little ghost isn't just decoration; he's a quest engine with a nail.

Fortnitemares is stacking bodies this year

Zoom out and the Hollow Knight drop is one piece of a genuinely loaded month. Fortnitemares 2026 kicked off October 1 and runs through November 1, when the final season of Chapter 7 begins. The Five Nights at Freddy's skins are the season's showstopper — the one everyone circled on the calendar — but Epic isn't stopping there. On October 7, the same day the Hollow Knight bundle arrived, Fortnite teased future collaborations with One Piece and Chainsaw Man. That's a horror-season lineup with anime heavyweights waiting in the wings, which means the Item Shop is about to be very busy and a lot of wallets are about to be very light.

That's the context that makes the Hollow Knight math sting a little more. This isn't a one-off overpriced bundle; it's the opening bid in a month where Fortnite is going to ask you to open your wallet four or five times. The V-Bucks denominations are never going to line up cleanly. The leftover balances are going to accumulate. And somewhere in a meeting room, somebody has a spreadsheet showing exactly how much revenue lives in those leftover 100-V-Buck balances.

More games coverage: our GTA VI countdown at 42 days out, Ubisoft's free play days this October weekend, and Ace Combat 8: Wings of the Veil is out now.
