Prime Video's Fourth Wing Casts Its Leads: Esther McGregor Is Violet, Emilio Sakraya Is Xaden

Prime Video's Fourth Wing adaptation has reportedly cast Esther McGregor as Violet Sorrengail and Emilio Sakraya as Xaden Riorson, per Deadline and Variety. Amazon declined to comment, Michael B. Jordan's Outlier Society produces, and the fandom is split.

BookTok's most argued-over casting search is over. Prime Video's television adaptation of Fourth Wing, Rebecca Yarros's bestselling romantasy novel, has reportedly found its two leads: Esther McGregor will play Violet Sorrengail and Emilio Sakraya will play Xaden Riorson, according to reports published October 15 by Deadline and Variety. Amazon declined to comment on the casting, a silence that trade coverage treated as the deals being effectively done, and within hours the announcement had become the biggest entertainment story in the book world — celebrated by half the fandom and contested, loudly, by the other half.

The stakes explain the noise. Fourth Wing, published in 2023, opens Yarros's Empyrean series and follows Violet Sorrengail, a 20-year-old who has trained for a quiet life in the Scribe Quadrant, recording the history of the kingdom of Navarre. Her mother, commanding general Lilith Sorrengail, orders her into Basgiath War College instead, where hundreds of cadets compete to bond with dragons and join Navarre's elite riders under a simple rule: graduate or die. Waiting for her there is Xaden Riorson, a third-year wingleader with shadow-wielding powers whose father led a rebellion against the kingdom — and the books build the pair from wary enemies into the series' central romance. Two sequels, Iron Flame (2023) and Onyx Storm (2025), are already out, with more planned, and Prime Video has plans to adapt the rest of the series.

A series order, a heavyweight producer, and a long runway

The casting lands on a production that has been assembling serious weight behind the camera. Amazon MGM Studios acquired the television rights to the Empyrean books in 2023, and Prime Video ordered the adaptation to series in May. Michael B. Jordan's Outlier Society is producing alongside Amazon MGM Studios, with Jordan and Elizabeth Raposo executive producing for Outlier Society. Meredith Averill, whose credits include The Haunting of Hill House, is set to showrun and executive produce, and Westworld co-creator Lisa Joy will direct the first episode, with Joy, Jonathan Nolan and Athena Wickham executive producing for Kilter Films. Liz Pelletier and Sherryl Clark of Premeditated Productions round out the producing team. It is the kind of bench streamers assemble when they expect a franchise, not a one-off.

Jordan confirmed his involvement in January, telling fans the team intended to deliver a show that gives readers what they want from the books while still surprising them. That promise is now the production's central tension, because no fandom arrives with its casting opinions pre-formed quite like this one. For three years, readers have fancast Violet and Xaden across social media, and the two roles — a chronically ill heroine whose body is part of the story, and a romantic lead Yarros deliberately described in open terms — were always going to be the announcement that made or broke the adaptation's honeymoon.

The Xaden the fans campaigned for

Sakraya, 30, is the pick much of the fandom made itself. Born in Berlin, he built his career in German film and television first — the boxing drama Rheingold, directed by Fatih Akin, Netflix's Tribes of Europa and the heist film 60 Minutes — before crossing into English-language genre television as JC in Netflix's Warrior Nun and as Xenon in Peacock's Roman epic Those About to Die. He has also already filmed his next franchise role, playing rebel leader Koza in the third season of Netflix's live-action One Piece. For months before the announcement, fans had been decoding his workout posts and dragon emojis as an unofficial audition campaign, and USA Today's report on the reaction found readers who felt the role had gone to the man they had been picturing all along.

He also satisfies the author's one stated condition. Yarros has said in interviews, including with Variety, that her single casting requirement was that Xaden not be whitewashed — she has described the character simply as a person of color and declined for years to pin down his appearance further, precisely so the role would stay open. In the same conversations she said she hoped the series would cast an up-and-coming generation of actors rather than established stars. Sakraya, a major name in Germany who is still new to most American viewers, fits that brief almost exactly.

McGregor, the swing — and the split reaction

McGregor, 24, is the bolder choice. The daughter of Ewan McGregor, she broke out this year as Mirren Sinclair in Prime Video's adaptation of We Were Liars, and her film credits include Babygirl and Pedro Almodovar's The Room Next Door. She is currently in production on another Prime Video adaptation, the video-game drama Life Is Strange. Violet's fancasts had leaned toward other names, and USA Today's October 15–16 coverage of the reaction captured the split honestly: some readers posted that the leads looked nothing like the characters they had imagined, while others celebrated — one TikTok creator who had advocated for Sakraya for two years greeted the news as a vindication, and another urged fans not to spiral and to trust the streamer's casting instincts. The Tab's October 16 coverage told the same story of a fandom divided down the middle within a day of the news.

That divide is, in its way, a sign of health. Adaptations of quiet books can afford quiet casting; Fourth Wing is the opposite — a series whose readers track production news the way sports fans track a transfer window. Prime Video has recent evidence it can land this plane with the same audience: its Mike Flanagan adaptation of Carrie became a word-of-mouth hit this month, as our review of Carrie and our premiere coverage documented. The streamer is now building a run of literary genre adaptations, with Fourth Wing positioned as the biggest of them.

What happens next is the long part. Amazon has not announced a production start, a premiere window, or the rest of the Basgiath ensemble — the riders, rivals and family members around Violet and Xaden who fill out the books' war college. Those announcements will restart the fancast wars each time, and the first footage will be judged frame by frame against three years of fan edits. But the two chairs that mattered most are now filled, by one actor the fans chose themselves and one they are still arguing about. For a show about a college where the entrance exam can kill you, that feels about right. For more of the week's television, see our coverage of AMC+'s Yaga and our weekend watch guide.
