Grand Theft Auto VI is still 15 days from release, and by the industry’s best public estimate it has already done blockbuster business. Sensor Tower, the market intelligence firm, estimates GTA VI had accumulated 7.71 million digital preorders worth roughly $751 million as of Nov. 3 — figures reported Wednesday by Polygon, GameSpot and Dexerto. They are estimates, not official numbers: Rockstar Games and Take-Two Interactive have confirmed none of them.
The split tells the platform story of this console generation in one line. PlayStation 5 accounts for 5.74 million of those preorders — 74 percent, worth an estimated $559 million. Xbox Series X|S accounts for 1.97 million, the remaining 26 percent, worth $192 million. Sony holds the marketing rights for the game on PS5, and the estimate says the audience has followed the marketing.

Games · The MathThe average preorder costs about $97
Divide the money by the copies and a second story appears. On Sensor Tower’s numbers, the average GTA VI preorder is worth roughly $97 — far above the $79.99 standard edition. That gap means a large share of buyers are skipping the base game entirely and paying up front for the $99.99 Ultimate Edition; reporting around the data has pointed to the premium edition doing the heavy lifting since the preorder window opened in June. The estimate has also been climbing fast: the same tracker put the game at roughly 6.45 million preorders in mid-October, which means more than a million additional preorders — over $100 million — arrived in about two weeks.

Games · The Fine PrintAn estimate is not a sales figure
Sensor Tower models storefront data; it does not see Rockstar’s books, and publishers almost never confirm preorder counts — so the honest way to hold these numbers is as a well-sourced industry estimate, not an audited total. Two caveats cut in opposite directions. The estimate counts digital preorders only, net of refunds; the physical-edition business for a launch this size is not in it at all, which means the true preorder total across every format is higher. And a model can miss in either direction — which is why the decimal matters less than the scale. Even if the estimate is off by a fifth, GTA VI is carrying a pre-launch book of business with few precedents in the industry’s history.
The first official checkpoint arrives Monday. Take-Two reports quarterly earnings on Nov. 9, and while the company is not expected to hand out a preorder count of its own, the call is where executives will be pressed on launch demand — with the launch itself ten days behind it.
The demand signal is not coming from one firm’s model alone. Circana’s PlayerPulse data puts GTA VI purchase intent at 29 percent among U.S. console and PC gamers — a record reading for that tracker.
Games · The RunwayFifteen days out, the runway is already lit
The calendar between here and launch is crowded. Take-Two reports earnings Nov. 9, with the biggest launch in its history ten days out. Rockstar has set preload to begin Nov. 10, when some 212 gigabytes start landing on drives nine days before release. And on Nov. 19 itself, Sensor Tower projects the preorder count could reach 25 million.

The two people carrying all of it are Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos — and one of them is still officially a mystery. Rockstar has never confirmed the actor playing Jason, the subject of Previously’s spotlight on the biggest uncredited role in games. Whoever he is, an estimated 7.71 million people have already paid to watch him work.
On Nov. 19, the estimates stop mattering and the receipts start. Until then, the biggest game in the world exists as a spreadsheet — and even the spreadsheet is staggering.
