Harry Styles Became 16 Again at Harryween — X Factor Outfit, Stevie Wonder and All

Harryween came back to Madison Square Garden on Friday night after five years away — and Styles closed the penultimate night of his 30-night residency by dressing as the teenager who auditioned for The X Factor and singing the Stevie Wonder song that started everything.

The Short Version

Harry Styles spent Friday night at Madison Square Garden playing dress-up with his own life.

The show was the penultimate night of Together, Together, his 30-night residency at the Garden — and the return of Harryween, the Halloween concert tradition he last brought to New York five years ago. He opened the costume account early, taking the stage in a full Elvis costume while his band and dancers dressed as different versions of Harry Styles himself: the "As It Was" dancers, the green-boa Grammys Harry, Coachella Harry, Met Gala Harry. The band spent the night performing alongside a wardrobe of their own frontman.

The Elvis entrance set the terms for everything after it. A costume parade only works as a show-within-the-show if the room can read every outfit on sight, and this one could: each version of Styles the band wore is a chapter the audience already knows by heart. That is the quiet flex underneath the joke. Most performers dress up as somebody else on Halloween. Styles has accumulated enough public lives to dress his entire band as himself and still have eras left over — and then he reached for the one version nobody in the building expected him to touch.

Then came the turn nobody had on their bingo card. Styles changed into the outfit he wore as a 16-year-old auditioning for The X Factor — and sang Stevie Wonder's "Isn't She Lovely," the song he auditioned with. At one point he told the Garden crowd, "I work in a bakery," lifting the line he said to the judges at that audition, back when the bakery was his actual day job and the arena was not yet a plausible destination.

That is the whole arc of a career folded into one costume change: the teenager who needed a TV talent show to get heard, standing in the middle of a 30-night Madison Square Garden residency — one of the longest stands the building hosts — dressed as the kid, singing the kid's song, to a room that sold out anyway.

Harryween has history at this address. In 2021, Styles played two Halloween shows at the Garden. The first night he emerged as Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz, clicking his heels through a set while his band played in full Oz costume; the second night he arrived in an elaborate white ruffled clown costume and tore through a Britney Spears cover. In 2022 the tradition moved west to the Kia Forum in Los Angeles, where he played Danny Zuko to Olivia Newton-John's memory with "Hopelessly Devoted to You." Then the tradition went quiet — until Friday.

The week had already been building toward it. On Wednesday, Oct. 28, at the final non-Harryween show of the residency, Styles surprised the crowd with "Ever Since New York," performing the song for the first time in four years. Fans had been hunting for a Harryween surprise song in the days since. Friday delivered two: an Elvis entrance and a 16-year-old's audition, sixteen years on.

New York, for its part, made the weekend official. Manhattan's borough president declared Friday Harry Styles Appreciation Day in the borough, ahead of the Harryween finale — a piece of civic stationery that would have been unimaginable for the bakery kid in the audition outfit Styles wore onstage hours later.

A 30-night residency usually settles into routine by its final weekend — the show tightens, the surprises thin out, the ending is a formality. Friday ran the other direction. The penultimate night raised the bar the finale now has to clear, and it did it by looking backward harder than any nostalgia act would dare: not a medley of the hits, but the audition outfit, the audition song, and the day-job line, played completely straight in the middle of the biggest room of his career.

And it is not over. Harryween continues on Halloween night, Saturday, Oct. 31 — the grand finale of the entire 30-night residency. Friday's show set the terms: the costumes are the setlist's second language, the surprise song is a real surprise, and the man at the center of it is willing to dress as every version of himself, including the one who hadn't happened yet. What he wears to close the residency is, as of Friday night, the best unanswered question in pop.
