Orlando had survived the ending once. They did not survive it twice. New York City FC held 55.8 percent of the ball, took 17 shots to Orlando's 10 and won nine corners to three, yet the home side spent the last forty minutes protecting a one-goal lead, watched a penalty slide wide at 81', and then conceded with the last kick that mattered — substitute Jonathan Shore finishing from the right side of the box in the ninth minute of stoppage time to make it 2-2.
New York struck first. At 18', Hannes Wolf worked the ball across the face of goal and Alonso Martínez finished left-footed from very close range — his first goal since returning from a knee injury, per the Associated Press. The visitors then lost their goalkeeper: Matt Freese, treated at 6' and again at 26', came off at 28' having made one save. Tomás Romero took his place, and four minutes later he was beaten.
Griezmann and Ojeda turn it around
The equaliser was the marquee moment of the first half. Martín Ojeda crossed at 32' and Antoine Griezmann, left alone at the penalty spot, headed from the centre of the box into the top left corner. Per the AP, the goal took Griezmann to 20 goal contributions in 15 MLS appearances — the second-fastest any player has reached that mark in league history, behind only Lionel Messi (14 matches). New York pressed for a second — Nicolás Fernández Mercau was caught offside at 39' — but the half ended 1-1.
Four minutes after it, Orlando led. Vinícius Nogueira headed a pass into Ojeda's path, and Ojeda drove a left-footed shot from the left side of the box into the bottom right corner at 49'. The man who crossed for Griezmann's goal now had one of his own — his 50th goal for Orlando in all competitions, per the AP and Field Level Media, and his team-leading 16th of the season per FLM.
The penalty, and then the kick that counted
Orlando's defence of that lead was not comfortable. Maxime Crépeau finished with five saves, and at 78' the game tilted: Talles Magno, himself a 71st-minute substitute, drew a foul in the area from Wilder Cartagena, who was booked for it. Magno took the kick himself at 81' — and missed, his right-footed shot sliding to the left of the goal with Crépeau facing it. No save was needed. The lead lived.
It lived through a delay for treatment to Crépeau at 88', and into nine added minutes. Then James Sands — booked back at 44' — played the ball back for Shore near the top of the box, and Shore, who had replaced Aiden O'Neill at 71', struck it right-footed from the right side of the area inside the bottom left corner at 90'+9'. One touch, per the AP, and the point belonged as much to New York as to Orlando.
The draw leaves Orlando (12-13-6, 42 points) unbeaten in four and tied on points for seventh in the East with FC Cincinnati, holding the tiebreaker, per Field Level Media. New York (8-12-11, 35 points) has one win in its last 14 league matches and, per FLM, trails the New York Red Bulls by four points for the final Eastern Conference playoff berth with three matches left. Orlando play at Chicago on Wednesday; New York host Atlanta the same night, per the AP.
