King Taco has been feeding Los Angeles since 1974. This week it packed up the trompo and came to Las Vegas for the first time: three days only, Thursday through Saturday, inside Pink Monkey at 100 S. 6th St. downtown, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. No permanent address, no soft opening. One weekend, and then it's gone.
And it is not over yet — today is day two, and you can still go. Doors open at 11 this morning, it runs until 9 tonight, and tomorrow, Saturday, is the last day.
The Takeover
This is a full takeover, not a food-truck cameo. The King Taco sign went up over the door, a mariachi band played the patio, and inside it was the East LA program — tortillas on the flat top, meat coming off the trompo, asada on the grill, tacos dressed with onion and cilantro and your pick of red or green. The day-one menu board read like home: tacos at $2.85 — asada, al pastor, suadero, carnitas, tinga — with aguas frescas at $4.
Day One
Vegas showed up early. Day-one footage put about 50 people in line before the doors opened, and one count from the door had the first two orders at 45 tacos between them. From the sidewalk, the rest of the day looked like a sellout pace — Previously's own read from downtown Thursday night was that the room ran through what it brought. King Taco has not called it a sellout, and neither will we. What is on the record is the comment section under both brands' posts, and it only says one thing: stay. Whether a three-day weekend like this is a quiet test run for a permanent Vegas shop is speculation — nobody at King Taco has said that. But this is exactly what a test run looks like when it works.
Five Decades From a Truck
The backstory is the real draw. In 1974, Don Raúl and Doña Lupe started King Taco out of a converted ice cream truck in East LA. The truck became a stand, the stand became more than twenty locations across Southern California, and five decades in it is still a family business and still one of the first names in any honest LA taco conversation. Vegas gets plenty of LA's chains eventually. It almost never gets one of its originals, in the original form, for exactly three days.
Before You Go
You have not missed it — today, Friday, and tomorrow, Saturday, are both still to come, and the doors open at 11 a.m. both days. The first 50 customers each day get free King Taco merch, and the Vegas-only drop — the black tee and tote riffing on the Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas sign — is sold at the pop-up only, while it lasts. Saturday, November 7 is the last day. After that, the closest King Taco is a drive to LA.
