The Short Version

  • A teenager who was turned away at the door of a private Halloween party pulled a gun on a security guard and opened fire outside the Versalles Reception Hall around 1:05 a.m. Saturday, Mesa police told FOX 10. The shots missed — the security officer was not struck, Mesa Police Detective Jose Aguirre said.
  • An off-duty Mesa police officer and the venue's security guard returned fire as the teen fled toward a nearby car, wounding the juvenile suspect and an adult man sitting inside the vehicle. Both were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries; neither the off-duty officer, the security guard, nor any bystanders were hurt.
  • Despite being shot, the teen ran south across Main Street, where an on-duty patrol officer intercepted and arrested him. Before surrendering, the teen removed a firearm from his waistband and placed it on the ground, Aguirre said.
  • The Scottsdale Police Department is leading the officer-involved shooting investigation through the East Valley Critical Incident Response Team; Mesa police are handling the underlying aggravated assault investigation, per FOX 10. Identities of those involved have not been released.

How the chaos started

FOX 10 reported that the incident unfolded around 1:05 a.m. outside the Versalles Reception Hall near East Main Street and North Lazona Drive, according to Mesa police. A teenage suspect tried to get into a private Halloween event being held inside the venue but was denied entry at the door. Instead of walking away, the teen pulled out a firearm, pointed it at the security officer, and fired. The shots missed — no one at the door was hit.

What happened next turned a scary moment into a full-blown gunfight. The teenager ran toward a nearby car while continuing to fire his weapon. Both an off-duty Mesa police officer who was on scene and the venue's security guard pursued the fleeing teen and returned fire, striking the juvenile suspect and an adult man who was sitting inside the vehicle the teen was running toward. Despite being shot, the teenager kept running south across Main Street, where an on-duty patrol officer intercepted him. Before surrendering, the teen took a firearm from his waistband and placed it on the ground.

"When the gunfire happened, the people here at the event started to scatter out of the event," Mesa Police Detective Jose Aguirre said. "So, it was chaotic." Nobody else — not the off-duty officer, not the security guard, not a single bystander — was hurt.

Two wounded, both expected to live

The wounded teenager and the adult man from the vehicle were both taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to FOX 10. Azfamily reported that investigators described the shooting as stemming from a dispute outside the reception hall overnight Saturday. Police have not said whether the adult in the car had any connection to the teenager or was simply in the wrong place — a question investigators will have to answer as the case develops.

The teen's age has not been released; police are referring to the suspect only as a juvenile. The off-duty officer's identity has not been released either, which is standard while the officer-involved shooting investigation runs its course.

The investigation is now in the hands of the Scottsdale Police Department, which is leading it through the East Valley Critical Incident Response Team — the multi-agency unit that handles officer-involved shootings across the Valley. That process will reconstruct every shot fired: the teen's initial shots at the security guard, the return fire from the off-duty officer and the security guard, and the exact sequence that left two people wounded.

A Halloween party, a locked door, and a gun

There's something deeply unsettling about the particulars here. This wasn't a bar fight that escalated or a robbery gone wrong. A teenager showed up to a private party he wasn't invited to, got told no at the door, and answered with a gun. The security guard at the door did his job — denied entry, took fire, survived it. The off-duty officer happened to be there and acted. The adult sitting in a parked car may have done nothing at all and still took a bullet.

Reception halls like Versalles host these private events constantly — quinceañeras, weddings, holiday parties — and they rely on a door person and a security presence to keep the guest list honest. Nobody plans for the person who gets turned away to come back shooting. The venue's security guard fired his weapon in return, which raises its own set of legal questions that the East Valley team will sort through alongside the officer-involved component.

For the partygoers inside — people in costumes, at a Halloween event in early October, out for a good time — the night ended with them scattering into a Mesa street at 1 a.m. while police lights took over the parking lot. That's the image that sticks: costumes and chaos, a door that did its job, and a teenager who decided "no" was worth dying over.

What happens now

The teen is in custody after the on-duty patrol officer intercepted and arrested him south of Main Street. Police have not released the identities of those involved, the type of firearm recovered, or what prompted the initial denial of entry, according to FOX 10. The adult man's connection to the teenager — if any — has not been established, and his injuries are expected to be survivable.

The East Valley Critical Incident Response Team investigation will take weeks, and its findings will determine whether the off-duty officer's use of force was justified — the standard review for every police shooting in the Valley. The security guard's actions will be reviewed under a different lens: private security use of force, in defense of a venue and its guests, against an active shooter who had already fired.

This is a developing story. Previously will update it as Scottsdale police release findings.
