Modern Warfare 4’s DMZ Opens Today at 10 AM PT — Digital Pre-Orders Drop Into Hajin Three Days Early

DMZ early access starts Tuesday, October 20 at 10 AM PT / 1 PM ET / 5 PM UTC for digital pre-orders of any edition, ahead of the full October 23 launch. The campaign has been live since October 16 — and this year, there is no Game Pass day-one route in.

The staggered launch of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 reaches its second stage today. DMZ early access opens on Tuesday, October 20 at 10 AM PT / 1 PM ET / 5 PM UTC for anyone who has digitally pre-ordered any edition of the game, three days before the full launch on Friday, October 23. Notebookcheck and AllThings. How both confirm the timing, and both stress the same practical point: the unlock is simultaneous worldwide, not a rolling midnight release, so there is no region-switching shortcut into Hajin early.

Who gets in — and who does not

Eligibility is about the format of your purchase, not its price. Digital pre-orders of the Standard Digital Edition or the Vault Edition qualify, across Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, PlayStation 5, Battle.net, Steam and Nintendo Switch 2, per Notebookcheck and the game’s Xbox store listing. A physical copy does not unlock early access, even if it was ordered weeks ago, because retail discs ship for the general release date. The campaign has been open to the same digital pre-order audience since Friday, October 16, so today’s arrivals are the second wave of a launch Activision has deliberately stretched across a full week.

There is one more break with recent habit worth knowing before Friday: Modern Warfare 4 is not launching on Xbox Game Pass. Wikipedia’s release summary, citing Activision’s announcements, notes that unlike Black Ops 6 and Black Ops 7, which launched on the service on release day, Modern Warfare 4 is set to reach Game Pass at least a year after release. If you were planning to play this one on a subscription, that plan needs rethinking — this year, Call of Duty is a purchase.

What DMZ is this time

DMZ returns as Infinity Ward’s extraction mode, set in the Hajin Exclusion Zone, where squads deploy as off-the-books assets behind enemy lines, pursue objectives against AI forces and rival squads, and then have to extract with whatever they intend to keep. Notebookcheck details the progression structure: DMZ runs on its own level track stretching to Level 70, separate from the standard Level 1 to 55 system. Experience comes from story missions, dynamic operations and side ops, and it counts even if you fail to extract — and it also feeds your overall player level, so a bad run is not a wasted run.

Progression is anchored at the Forward Operating Base. Each DMZ level unlocks stations and upgrades at the FOB, including, at Level 2, a 3D printer that works at the base between deployments rather than mid-match. The printer can craft gear such as the Medium Backpack, and that pack’s secure slots protect items if an extraction fails — an insurance mechanic that changes how aggressively a squad can play the late minutes of a run. Players can also deploy with a free loadout, then contend with AI forces and rival squads on the way to the exfil, per Notebookcheck. FinalBoss adds the bounty loop: a Lieutenant’s dog tags have to make the return journey to the FOB before the bounty pays, which makes the squad carrying the evidence a target for everyone else on the map.

The campaign that is already running

While DMZ players drop in today, campaign players are already four days in. The story, per the game’s official Xbox listing, opens as North Korea launches a full-scale invasion of the South: a young squad of South Korean soldiers fights to survive on collapsing front lines — the campaign follows Private Park, a young South Korean soldier seeing live combat for the first time — while Captain Price wages a personal, off-book war from the shadows half a world away. The two threads collide as the war spreads. The campaign’s set pieces range from trench warfare in Korea to close-quarters combat in New York, chases through Paris and SAS night raids in Mumbai.

Modern Warfare 4 was announced on May 28, 2026 and is billed as the final entry in the rebooted Modern Warfare sub-series, though Activision’s chief marketing officer Tyler Bahl has not ruled out bringing back certain characters in future games, per Wikipedia. It is also the sub-series’ first native Nintendo Switch 2 version, developed by Digital Legends Entertainment, with cross-play and optional Joy-Con 2 mouse controls on that platform. On PC, Notebookcheck notes Nvidia DLSS 4.5 support and a requirement for TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot.

What happens on Friday

The full launch on October 23 opens everything to everyone: multiplayer joins the campaign and DMZ, physical editions activate, and the early-access experiment ends. The open beta, which ran from August 21 to September 1, offered the first public signal of how this staggered structure would feel — for the first time in the franchise’s history, that beta included a campaign mission, “Entrenched,” alongside multiplayer and a new Resurgence map for Warzone. Activision is clearly testing whether a week-long rolling launch builds momentum better than a single midnight. Today, with DMZ live at 10 AM Pacific, is the middle of that test — and the first time extraction players get to answer it.
