Twenty years ago, The Black Parade got as close as an album can get without touching the top. It debuted at No. 2 in the fall of 2006, stayed My Chemical Romance's highest-charting album through a breakup, a reunion and a generation of fans growing up on it — and never went any higher.
This week it went higher. The Black Parade jumps from No. 139 to No. 1 on the Billboard 200 dated November 7, following the album's 20th anniversary deluxe reissue. It is the band's first No. 1 album in the United States. Ever.
The wait itself is the record. Billboard notes that The Black Parade's 20 years between release and reaching No. 1 is the longest wait any album has ever had, passing the 15 years and nine months Toby Keith's 35 Biggest Hits needed before it topped the chart following his death in 2024. Zoom out further and the band's own clock is longer still: 22 years and four months passed between My Chemical Romance's Billboard 200 debut, with Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge on the chart dated June 26, 2004, and this first leader. They are the third act in 2026 alone to wait at least a decade from a chart debut to a first No. 1, after Megadeth in February and Jhené Aiko in September — but nobody waited like this.
The jump is its own headline. A vault from No. 139 to No. 1 is the largest leap to the top since Taylor Swift's Fearless (Taylor's Version) soared 157 to 1 in October 2021, and that one needed a superstar at the peak of her powers. This one was powered by people going out and buying a 20-year-old rock opera.
The receipts say exactly that. In the week ending October 29, The Black Parade earned 78,000 equivalent album units in the U.S., up 653%, according to Luminate. Pure album sales account for 68,000 of those units — up 2,082% — as the set surges 29 to 1 on Top Album Sales for the band's first week atop that chart too. Streaming contributed 10,000 units, about 10.14 million on-demand official streams. And vinyl did the heavy lifting inside the sales number: 42,000 vinyl copies in one week, the band's best vinyl week ever. The reissue arrived in more than 20 physical variants across vinyl, CD and cassette, including signed editions and expanded versions with bonus tracks — and the fanbase treated it like an event, because for them it was one.
The same week, the album did the same thing across the Atlantic. The 20th anniversary edition gave My Chemical Romance its first-ever No. 1 in the U.K. as well, after the original release peaked at No. 2 there too. Two countries, two first-ever chart-toppers, one 20-year-old album.
None of this is happening in a vacuum. The band has been celebrating The Black Parade on tour since July 2025, performing the album in its world night after night — including a five-night stand at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles this October — with the trek slated to wrap November 22 in Indonesia. The album's signature song never really left, either: "Welcome to the Black Parade" remains the band's highest-charting hit on the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at No. 9 in January 2007, and it is their sole No. 1 on Alternative Airplay, where it spent seven weeks on top in late 2006. A whole new class of fans met this record as teenagers the second time around; this week, both classes showed up at the register at the same time.
There is a tidy argument buried in the numbers about how first-week chart races usually work now. The rest of this week's top six are all former No. 1 albums coasting on streaming gravity — Olivia Rodrigo's new album slipping to No. 2 with 64,000 units, Morgan Wallen steady at No. 3, Taylor Swift at No. 6. The Black Parade beat them the old way: 68,000 people buying the album, most of them on purpose, a lot of them on vinyl. Twenty years after it missed, the parade finally arrived — and it arrived with receipts.
