NFL Tuesday Wire: Dillon Gabriel Cleared to Return as the IR List Keeps Growing

Dillon Gabriel’s 21-day return window opens in Cleveland while Paris Johnson Jr., Edgerrin Cooper and Donovan Jackson headline a growing injured-reserve list — and teams churn the bottom of their rosters ahead of Week 6.

The Short Version

Tuesday was transaction day around the NFL, and the theme was hard to miss: contenders keep losing starters while everyone else churns the bottom of the roster ahead of Week 6. The headline move belongs to Cleveland, where the Browns designated quarterback Dillon Gabriel to return from injured reserve — but the bigger story is the IR list, which kept growing in Arizona, Green Bay, Minnesota, Houston, Jacksonville and New York.

Here is what Tuesday's moves mean, team by team.

NFLBrowns: Dillon Gabriel's 21-day clock starts

The Browns designated Gabriel to return from injured reserve, opening the young quarterback's 21-day practice window. Cleveland now has three weeks to activate him to the 53-man roster — or he stays on IR for the rest of the season. Gabriel landed on IR with a back injury, and the designation signals the Browns are ready to get a real look at him in practice again. Per ESPN's Daniel Oyefusi, the move is procedural for now, but for a franchise constantly re-evaluating its quarterback room, every healthy arm matters. If Gabriel shows he is right physically, Cleveland has a decision to make on the back end of the roster.

The window leaves Cleveland no room to hesitate: once it opens, the Browns have 21 days to activate Gabriel to the 53-man roster, or he stays on IR for the rest of the season. For a franchise constantly re-evaluating its quarterback room, the designation is really an extended tryout — a chance to get a real look at him in practice after a back injury, and to see whether one more healthy arm changes the calculus. The move is procedural for now, per ESPN’s Daniel Oyefusi, but if Gabriel shows he is right physically, the decision lands on the back end of the 53, where one activation means somebody else’s spot.

NFLCardinals: season-ending blow at left tackle

No team had a worse Tuesday than Arizona. The Cardinals placed star tackle Paris Johnson Jr. on injured reserve with a biceps injury that is being described as season-ending — a devastating loss for an offensive line built around his blind-side protection. Tight end Hunter Long landed on IR as well with a knee injury. To patch the hole at tackle, Arizona signed Jedrick Wills off the Bills' practice squad. Wills is a veteran swing option, but replacing Johnson for the rest of the season is a different job than filling a week — the Cardinals' protection plan just got a full rebuild.

The scale of the loss is the story. Johnson is the blind-side anchor the Cardinals built their offensive line around, and a season-ending biceps injury means the protection plan gets rebuilt rather than patched. Jedrick Wills is a veteran swing option signed off the Bills’ practice squad, but replacing Johnson for the rest of the season is a different job than filling a single week — Arizona faces a full midseason rebuild of its protection. With tight end Hunter Long landing on IR with a knee injury the same day, Tuesday gutted the Cardinals’ offense at two positions at once, and no team had a worse day.

NFLPackers, Vikings, Texans: more starters to IR

Green Bay placed linebacker Edgerrin Cooper on injured reserve, thinning the second level of a defense that leans on his speed. The Packers signed linebacker Kristian Welch from the practice squad to backfill. In Minnesota, guard Donovan Jackson went to IR, a hit to the interior of the Vikings' line, while cornerback Tyreek Chappell was waived with an injury settlement. Houston placed cornerback Jaylin Smith on IR and added a familiar name to the practice squad: running back Deuce Vaughn, the ex-Cowboys sixth-rounder, per Aaron Wilson.

NFLJaguars, Jets, Steelers, Seahawks: depth-churn Tuesday

Jacksonville placed safety Caleb Ransaw on IR, signed cornerback Jaylon Jones from the practice squad and waived cornerback Christian Braswell with an injury designation — a busy day in a secondary that is suddenly short on bodies. The Jets placed defensive end Braiden McGregor on IR and signed defensive end Nate Lynn to keep the edge rotation intact. Pittsburgh signed cornerback Terell Smith to the 53-man roster off the Commanders' practice squad, and Seattle signed running back Robert Henry Jr. to the active roster off the same Commanders practice squad, releasing safety AJ Finley to make room.

NFLBears and Rams add veteran names

The Bears are signing wide receiver Scotty Miller to the practice squad, per ESPN's Adam Schefter. Miller, 29, is a former Buccaneers sixth-rounder with real speed — a low-cost stash for a receiver room that can use another field-stretcher in practice. The Rams signed 34-year-old linebacker Eric Kendricks, the ex-Vikings second-rounder, to their practice squad — a veteran insurance policy with a decade of starting experience if the linebacker room thins out.

NFLPatriots stash a corner as the secondary crisis deepens

New England released outside linebacker Jose Ramirez and signed cornerback Al'Zillion Hamilton to the practice squad — and the timing is no accident. The Patriots' secondary is in crisis: Christian Gonzalez and Channing Canada both missed Sunday's game against Buffalo, backup Charles Woods got banged up, and that came just a week after getting Carlton Davis III back from a neck injury. Hamilton is a developmental flier with real college production: at Fresno State he played 54 games with 35 starts, piling up 123 tackles, eight interceptions and 26 passes defensed. The Rams signed him as an undrafted free agent in April and cut him in August. If the injury wave keeps rolling, Hamilton could find himself on the 53 before long.

The Hamilton signing only makes sense against the full injury picture. Gonzalez and Canada both missed Sunday’s game against Buffalo, backup Charles Woods got banged up, and Carlton Davis III had only just returned from a neck injury a week earlier — a secondary cycling through corners faster than it can get them healthy. Hamilton’s Fresno State résumé is exactly the profile teams stash for weeks like this: 54 games, 35 starts, 123 tackles, eight interceptions and 26 passes defensed, signed by the Rams as an undrafted free agent in April and cut in August. If the injury wave keeps rolling, the practice squad may be only a waiting room before the 53.

And then there is Philadelphia, where the backfield situation went from uncertain to full-blown crisis: Tank Bigsby is on injured reserve and Saquon Barkley's status for London is up in the air. Read the full story on the Eagles' backfield crisis.

The pattern across Tuesday's wire is the October reality of the NFL: the starters who make seasons keep going down — Johnson, Cooper, Bigsby — and the churn at the bottom of the roster never stops. Week 6 rosters will look meaningfully different from Week 5's. Keep up with every move on the NFL page.
