Nuggets Wait on Thursday MRI After Julian Strawther's Left Knee Bends in Preseason Loss to Clippers

Denver wing Julian Strawther left Wednesday's 122-110 preseason loss to the Los Angeles Clippers in the third quarter with a left knee injury after his foot slipped and his knee bent awkwardly. Coach David Adelman said Strawther will have an MRI on Thursday morning and that the team is hoping for the best.

This is the moment every team dreads in a game that does not count. In the third quarter on Wednesday night at Intuit Dome, Denver Nuggets wing Julian Strawther was trying to keep the ball away from Clippers defender Isaiah Jackson when his foot came out from under him and his left knee bent at an awkward angle. Strawther stayed on the floor in obvious pain, covered his face with a towel a teammate handed him, and was eventually helped up and taken straight back to the locker room. He did not return.

What Happened on the Play

The injury came in a routine preseason sequence, which is precisely why it stung. Strawther, working against pressure, lost his footing as he tried to avoid a steal, and his left leg landed beneath him. The replay, shared widely on social media during the game, showed the knee bending in a way that immediately silenced the usual preseason chatter. Denver's bench reacted the way benches do when they know: quickly, and quietly.

Before he left, Strawther had been one of Denver's brighter performers on the night. He finished with 11 points on 4-of-9 shooting, with two rebounds and three made three-pointers. Most of that production came in the first half, when he was paired at times with the starters and looked, once again, like a player who had spent the summer productively — because, by every account out of Denver's camp, he had.

What Adelman Said Afterward

Head coach David Adelman offered no diagnosis on Wednesday night, only a timetable for finding one. He described it simply as a left knee injury, said the MRI would happen Thursday morning, and said the team was hoping for the best. He also made plain how much work Strawther had put in over the summer, and how badly he felt for a player who had been earning his opportunity the hard way.

That restraint is standard, and correct. Knee injuries that look frightening on replay sometimes resolve into sprains and short absences; others do not. Until Thursday's imaging is read, anything beyond what Adelman said would be guesswork, and Previously is not going to guess about a 24-year-old's knee.

Why Strawther's Role Was Growing

The cruel part of the timing is that Strawther was in the middle of his best preseason as a professional. Denver Sports reported he came into Wednesday averaging about 14 points in the exhibition schedule, the fourth-year guard out of Gonzaga competing directly with Alpha Diallo for what Adelman has described as the tenth spot in an expanded rotation. Before the trip to Los Angeles, Adelman said figuring out his secondary rotation mattered more to him right now than the starters, who he expects to be fine.

Denver's perimeter depth picture explains the opportunity. The Nuggets are counting on Strawther, veteran DeMar DeRozan and Tyus Jones as key bench contributors on the wing and in the backcourt. DeRozan did not play on Wednesday. If Strawther misses any time, reporting out of the game indicated Denver would lean even more heavily on DeRozan once the regular season begins, and the tenth-man competition Adelman wanted to judge on merit could be decided by medical availability instead.

The Contract Clock Behind the Injury

There is a second clock running that has nothing to do with basketball fitness. Denver Sports also noted the Nuggets have until Monday to give Strawther a rookie-scale extension. If no deal is reached by that deadline, he is likely headed toward restricted free agency next summer. A serious injury would not just change Denver's rotation; it would complicate a negotiation in which the team must price a promising young wing whose most recent image is being helped off a preseason floor.

That is a conversation for after the MRI. Front offices can model almost anything except uncertainty, and Thursday morning's scan is what converts this story from a scare into either a sigh of relief or a genuine early-season problem.

The Game Around the Injury

The game itself was secondary, and played like it after halftime. The Clippers won 122-110 in Denver's penultimate preseason outing, with the Nuggets' starters shut down at the break. Jamal Murray was sharp in his limited minutes, scoring 14 points on 6-of-8 shooting with four rebounds. Denver closes the preseason on Friday against the Los Angeles Lakers, a finale whose minutes decisions will now be watched for a different reason: whether there is any update on Strawther, and how Adelman reshuffles the bench wings auditioning in his absence.

Preseason basketball is supposed to answer small questions — who fits, who shoots, who defends a second unit. Wednesday night in Inglewood, it asked Denver a much bigger one, and the answer arrives Thursday morning in an MRI room.
