Spoiler warning. One Piece Chapter 1198, “The Island of Monsters,” doesn’t officially release until Sunday, November 8 — if you’re waiting for the official chapter, close this tab. Everyone else: Luffy has a new form, it doesn’t have a name, and the chapter treats it like a problem, not a prize.
The last pages of the chapter sit in Elbaf’s Western Village, and they play like a horror beat. Something is lounging on a rooftop, scratching itself, long tail curled around the shingles, its thought bubble completely empty. The Straw Hats stare up at it. “Hey, Luffy?!” somebody calls. What answers isn’t words — it’s animal noise. “UKI KI!!” Then it moves: across the village in a blur, onto the Rain God Zaza, and it bites down on her water body until she bursts apart in a single blow. The giants who just watched it happen land on the only question that matters: “Who the hell are you?!”
What the form actually looks like
Strip away the fan labels and the panels describe a dark, feral, ape-like shape: black shaggy hair, a heavy ape-like nose, sharp fangs, clawed black hands and a long tail. It grabs Zaza with both hands, squeezes, and finishes the job with its teeth — “UKYO!!” — while the giants around it cycle from confusion to horror: “A monkey?! …No, wait, that form!!!”
Measure it against the form it follows. Gear 5 is a cartoon — white flame hair, pink-ringed eyes, a grin so big it turns executions into slapstick. This thing doesn’t grin. It growls, it scratches, it bites. And it doesn’t speak a single word, which is the detail the whole fandom keeps circling: every Luffy form before this one, including Gear 5 at its wildest, kept Luffy’s voice. This one took it.
The chapter underlines the wrongness through the people who know him best. Gaban’s read, watching Luffy tear off mid-battle, is the line the spoilers keep quoting: “He’s a Zoan…” — said like a diagnosis, not a celebration. And when the form surfaces in the village, the reaction isn’t awe. It’s “No…!! That’s not him, right? What is that guy…”
No name — and the theories filling the vacuum
Here is the fact the trending posts keep skipping: the form has no official name. Oda gives it no title card, Luffy announces nothing — he can’t; he doesn’t talk — and nobody in the chapter names it. The labels flying around social media, “Gear 6” from some corners and “Gear Death” from others, are fan-made, and the “Black Nika” tag in the AI summary going around isn’t real either. As of Chapter 1198, the scariest thing about this form is that the story itself hasn’t told us what it is.
The leading theory comes from the series’ own rules. Zoan awakenings carry a known risk, spelled out back on Egghead by Shaka and shown years earlier with Impel Down’s Jailer Beasts: push an awakened Zoan too far and the fruit’s will can overtake the user’s mind. Gear 5 is the awakening of the Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika — a Mythical Zoan. A Luffy who can’t speak, doesn’t seem to register his own crew, and fights like an animal reads, to a lot of readers, like the overtake starting. The ape shape feeds a second thread — Hanuman and Sun Wukong parallels, right down to the tail and the Monkey D. surname — but that’s interpretation. The chapter confirms none of it.
Imu is the other monster
The chapter’s title is plural for a reason. While Luffy vanishes from the main fight, Imu reveals a third form — an enormous horned shape with an elongated torso, a long neck, and eyes opening in the dark all around it — and turns on Loki, demanding the ancient technology Elbaf is hiding. Loki answers with a reveal of his own, the hybrid form of the Dragon Dragon Fruit, Model: Nidhogg, and refuses the bargain outright: enslave Elbaf or die — “I refuse both…!!” It doesn’t save him. Imu puts him down, and the sound of it — “CRACK… LOKI!!!” — carries across the island.
But the chapter gives Imu a crack of his own, and it’s the first one he’s ever shown. Burning through the fight, he admits he’s spent: “If I don’t return to the Holy Land soon, Mu’s life is in danger…” and “I’m at my limit… I never expected to use this much power…!!” Whatever Imu is, Elbaf is costing him more than he can pay — which is exactly why he wants the island’s ancient technology, the secret Harald kept his mouth shut about too. Elsewhere, the undercard stays lopsided: Sanji shatters Killingham’s armor with one kick and sends the Holy Knight running, the second God’s Knight in two chapters to flee a Straw Hat.
Sunday, then a break
The official chapter lands Sunday, November 8 on MANGA Plus and VIZ — expect the form’s first clean, official look to restart the argument all over again. Then the series takes a break before Chapter 1199, which means two weeks of a fandom sitting with an unnamed transformation, a beaten prince, and a villain who just admitted this fight can hurt him. One Piece’s final saga has been building toward monsters on every side of the war. Chapter 1198 is where it shows you all of them at once — including, maybe, the one wearing the captain’s face.
