Phantom Blade Zero Sold 4 Million Copies in 72 Hours — and Lapped Battlefield 6 on Steam

S-GAME's debut has no sequel number, no movie tie-in and no 30-year franchise behind it. It just posted the biggest Steam launch of the year, with a peak player count that cleared Battlefield 6 and Marvel Rivals.

Four million copies. Seventy-two hours. One brand-new name.

S-GAME announced on Monday that Phantom Blade Zero — the Chinese studio's debut game, a wuxia action title that launched October 28 on PlayStation 5 and PC — has sold more than 4 million copies in its first three days on sale. “Thank you everyone from the bottom of our hearts for all the love and support!” the studio posted alongside the milestone. Eurogamer calls it Steam's biggest launch of the year so far, and the player numbers underneath the sales number explain why.

On Steam Charts' read, reported by GamesRadar, Phantom Blade Zero peaked at 822,361 concurrent players over its first weekend. IGN's Sunday read put the peak even higher, at 833,921. Whichever snapshot you take, the placement is the story: that peak outstrips the all-time Steam records of Marvel Rivals and Battlefield 6, two of the biggest multiplayer launches of the last two years, and it ran past the 24-hour peaks of PUBG, a game that practically invented the Steam concurrent chart. At the time GamesRadar wrote, nearly 400,000 people were still in the game at once.

The chart run started before the weekend did. IGN reported the game topped Steam's charts as soon as it launched — ahead of PUBG and Dota 2 — and was the platform's best-selling game by revenue, ahead of Modern Warfare 4. And the launch did not come out of nowhere: by IGN's reporting, the game had already sold an estimated 1 million copies before launch across Steam, PS5 and Tencent's WeGame storefront in China, with nearly two-thirds of those pre-launch sales coming from China, Taiwan and Hong Kong.

The reviews gave the crowd a reason to show up. The game carries an 88 on Metacritic — the number S-GAME's own milestone graphic prints next to an 89% Steam review score — and IGN's review scored it 9/10, calling it “an unbelievably smooth action game filled with memorable boss fights, compelling combat, and limitless swagger.” Previously covered the one loud dissent, a 6/10, when the game unlocked last week; three days of sales later, the argument has a scoreboard.

The honest comparison, and the one that keeps this in proportion, is Black Myth: Wukong. IGN notes Wukong — the last Chinese action giant to detonate like this — sold 10 million copies in its first three days. Phantom Blade Zero is not on that pace, and nobody should pretend 4 million is 10 million. But Wukong was 2024's once-a-cycle event. What Phantom Blade Zero just claimed is this year's title: the biggest launch on Steam in 2026, from a studio most players had never bought a game from before last Wednesday, because this is its first one.

The game itself is built to travel. You play Soul, an assassin framed for a murder by the organization he works for, fighting to clear his name through a wuxia world of martial arts and fantasy — kungfupunk, as the studio calls it. The cast is not small-time, either: Roger Craig Smith, the voice of Sonic the Hedgehog and Ezio Auditore, plays the lead; Maggie Robertson, Resident Evil's Lady Dimitrescu, is in the cast; and Donnie Yen served as a key creative consultant and plays Soul's father, Mó Yuan, through full facial, voice and motion-capture performance. When a debut game's credits read like that, the 4 million starts to look less like an accident.

S-GAME did not provide a per-platform breakdown of the 4 million, so the split between PC and PS5 is not known — anyone who tells you otherwise is guessing. What is known is the shape of the thing: a new studio, a new name, a single-player action game with no live-service hook, moving 4 million copies in a weekend and sitting on top of Steam's player chart over games built to live there permanently.

Sequels get weekends like this. Franchises get weekends like this. Debuts are not supposed to. Phantom Blade Zero just had one anyway — and Steam's biggest launch of 2026 belongs to the new kid.
