Shane Gillis hosts Saturday Night Live, the White Sox and Guardians play a winner-take-all ALDS Game 5, and Adam Scott’s folk horror Hokum is streaming on Hulu — Saturday night is the best night of the television week, and tonight is proving it. Here’s how to spend the evening, from first pitch to Weekend Update to lights-off horror.
The main event: ALDS Game 5
Start here, because it's live and it only happens once. The Chicago White Sox and Cleveland Guardians are playing a winner-take-all Game 5 in Cleveland on TBS and truTV, with the winner advancing to face the Tampa Bay Rays — all 101 wins of them — in the ALCS. Cleveland struck first and carried a 2-0 lead into the middle innings behind Gavin Williams, but in a winner-take-all game, no lead is safe and every pitch feels like the season. This is the kind of baseball you clear your evening for.
11:30 ET: SNL with Shane Gillis and Rosalía
When the baseball ends — or during the commercial breaks, we won't judge — Saturday Night Live has its third episode of Season 52, and it's a good one. Shane Gillis hosts for the third time, continuing one of the show's great redemption arcs: fired as a cast member in 2019 before he ever appeared, back as host in 2024, and now a reliable ratings draw with a Netflix series (Tires, renewed for a fourth season) and two Guinness World Records from a 77,000-seat stadium show in Philadelphia.
He's joined by Rosalía as musical guest, returning to the SNL stage. The show airs 11:30 PM ET / 8:30 PM PT on NBC and streams on Peacock, with the full episode available Sunday morning. Fair warning from the schedule: after tonight, SNL goes dark for two weeks before returning on Halloween — so this is your last live episode until October 31.

The streaming pick: Hokum on Hulu
For the horror-inclined, tonight's essential watch is Hokum, now streaming on Hulu. Adam Scott stars in the folk horror film that's been building buzz as the season's sleeper — the kind of slow-burn dread that plays perfectly on a Saturday night with the lights off. It's the ideal post-SNL wind-down: 90-odd minutes of atmosphere that'll have you thinking about it Sunday morning. Or, if you're watching on the West Coast, it's the perfect pre-SNL appetizer at 8:30.
Why Gillis works on SNL
Gillis is one of the few hosts who treats SNL like a live event rather than a promo stop. His sketches — the viral ‘CouplaBeers’ from Season 50, the chaotic ‘HR Meeting’ from Season 49 — have a specific energy: performers trying not to break while the audience loses it. He’ll be working with a Season 52 cast that includes veterans Kenan Thompson, Colin Jost and Michael Che alongside newcomers Saidah Belo-Osagie and Grace Reiter. And Rosalía — rumored to be performing from her Lux era — is the kind of musical guest who makes the music slots appointment viewing on their own.
If baseball isn’t your thing
The night’s real luxury is choice. If the ALDS isn’t your speed, college football’s late window has ranked teams jockeying for playoff position after the afternoon’s Georgia-Alabama headliner. If live TV isn’t your speed at all, Hulu’s Hokum is the call — and if horror isn’t your speed either, the weekend’s free games haul (Epic, Steam and Prime all have something) means you can spend exactly zero dollars and still have too much to play. Saturday night has never had this many good answers.
The nightcaps
College football's Saturday slate runs deep into the night after the Georgia-Alabama showdown headlined the afternoon — check the late games for playoff implications. And for the convention faithful, NYCC's Saturday programming — including the Blade Runner 2099 panel that stole the day — will be all over social feeds tonight, with the cosplay championship crowning its winners at 8:00 PM ET.
The ideal Saturday timeline
Here’s the optimal play, all times Eastern. 8:00 PM: first pitch of ALDS Game 5 — settle in, this one could go extras. Halftime of your attention around 9:30: queue up Hokum on Hulu so it’s ready. 11:30 PM: flip to NBC for SNL — Gillis’s monologue is usually the night’s high point, and you don’t want to miss it live. After Weekend Update: Hokum, lights off, phone on silent. Sunday morning: Peacock has the full SNL episode if you faded, and the box scores will tell you whether Cleveland or Chicago is still dancing.
One programming note: SNL’s two-week break after tonight means the show returns October 31 with Obsession star Inde Navarrette hosting and Gracie Abrams as musical guest — a Halloween episode to circle. But that’s three weeks away. Tonight, the choice is simple and the lineup is loaded.
Or ignore all of that and just watch the baseball. Winner-take-all Game 5s don’t come around every year — the Guardians haven’t faced an elimination game this pressurized since their 2016 run, and the White Sox are trying to finish a series they led 2-0. Everything else will be there tomorrow. This won’t.
The move: baseball first, SNL at 11:30, Hokum when you can't sleep. See you Monday.
