Shedeur Sanders Turned 38 Yards Into 297. Cleveland Still Lost by One.

Shedeur Sanders had 38 passing yards at halftime of his first start of 2026. He finished with 297, two touchdowns and no interceptions — and the Browns lost 23–22 in overtime at the Superdome.

For a half, the start looked like a favor the schedule did Shedeur Sanders and he could not return. Five completions on eight throws. Thirty-eight yards. A Browns offense that punted three times in five possessions and reached halftime tied 3–3 with an offense across the field playing the same sport at the same speed.

By the end of overtime, Sanders had thrown for 297 yards and two touchdowns without an interception, produced 259 of those yards after halftime, and put his team one two-point throw away from walking out of the Caesars Superdome with a win. The throw fell incomplete. The Saints won 23–22, and the best quarterback performance Cleveland has gotten all season ended in a loss column it did not deserve to sit in.

The start itself was an accident of the week. Deshaun Watson took a helmet-to-helmet hit against Pittsburgh last Sunday, entered the concussion protocol on Tuesday, and — as Previously reported Friday — Sanders took every first-team rep in practice while Watson's status wobbled. Watson cleared the protocol Saturday and the Browns still made him inactive, a decision that reads less like caution now and more like the staff wanting to see the second-year quarterback with a full week of preparation. He had thrown three passes all season before Sunday.

The first half gave them almost nothing to evaluate. Cleveland ran 20 times for 55 yards and treated its new starter like a secret. The one real chance came gift-wrapped: Adin Huntington forced a fumble on a punt return, the Browns recovered at the New Orleans 19, and the drive died at the goal line when Sanders bumped into guard Austin Barber on a handoff exchange and Quinshon Judkins got stuffed on fourth-and-goal from the 1. At halftime Sanders' line — 5 of 8, 38 yards — belonged in a preseason box score.

Then the third quarter started and the offense changed shape. On Cleveland's fourth play of the half, Sanders launched a 60-yard completion to Denzel Boston, the longest Browns play of the day to that point, and Andre Szmyt's 30-yard field goal put Cleveland in front 6–3. Charlie Smyth answered from 27 to tie it, then from 48 with 5:38 left in the fourth to give New Orleans a 9–6 lead, and the game had the feel of a kicking contest somebody was going to lose politely.

Seventeen seconds later the building changed. Sanders dropped back on first down and threw deep down the left sideline for rookie KC Concepcion, who caught it in stride, rerouted across the field and outran the secondary for a 64-yard touchdown — the first touchdown of Concepcion's career, and Sanders' first touchdown pass of the season. Cleveland 13, New Orleans 9, with 5:21 to play. From that snap on, Sanders completed 10 of 14 for 177 yards. The quarterback who spent a half handing off was suddenly the only reason his team was in the game.

New Orleans took the lead back the hard way. Tyler Shough, who threw for 265 yards, hit Chris Olave for 33 yards to the Cleveland 10, and Audric Estime — a running back the Browns waived and the Saints signed — punched it in from two yards out with 58 seconds left. Sanders got the ball back needing a field goal just to survive.

He got it in four plays. The throw people will replay came first: Chase Young hit him as he released, and Sanders still dropped a 30-yarder to Jerry Jeudy that reached the Saints' 40. A 7-yard completion to Jeudy followed, and Szmyt drove a 51-yard field goal through with eight seconds on the clock. Sixteen-all. Overtime.

The Browns deferred the coin toss and New Orleans made them pay for the extra possession: 11 plays, 74 yards, Shough finding Juwan Johnson in the corner of the end zone from 15 yards out. Under the current overtime rules Cleveland still got its drive, and Sanders nearly stole the whole afternoon anyway. On third-and-7 from the New Orleans 39 he hit Harold Fannin Jr. underneath, and Fannin broke Kool-Aid McKinstry's tackle attempt and bulldozed the rest of the way for a 39-yard touchdown with a minute left.

Todd Monken did not send Szmyt out for the tie. The Browns lined up to win it, Sanders rolled out under pressure, and his throw for Denzel Boston in the end zone fell incomplete — Tytus Howard was flagged for holding on the play, a penalty that changed nothing once the pass missed. Final: Saints 23, Browns 22. The full play-by-play and box score live in the Game Center.

The arithmetic is the argument. Sanders finished 19 of 31 for 297 yards, two touchdowns, no interceptions, a 114.6 passer rating — a career high, per Athlon Sports. He added 28 rushing yards on 10 carries and absorbed five sacks, several of them the kind that end drives and alter depth charts. Strip the first half away and the line is absurd: 259 yards and both touchdowns in the second half and overtime, against a defense that had spent three hours being praised for keeping him quiet. Bill Cowher, on the CBS postgame show, said Cleveland should keep the offense in Sanders' hands.

Watson is cleared. The Browns host Houston next Sunday at Huntington Bank Field, and the starter's job is now a conversation Sanders forced with one half of football in New Orleans. Cleveland fell to 5–4 and lost a second straight game for the first time this season, which matters more in the standings than anything a quarterback debate produces. But the tape from the fourth quarter and overtime does not care about the standings. It says the Browns found something in the Superdome. The loss says they found it about two hours too late.
