The short version: Two teams that spent last Saturday damaging their own playoff cases meet in Austin this Saturday, and the oddsmakers still believe in the home team. Texas (4-1) opened as a 9.5-point favorite over Florida (4-2) on FanDuel for the October 17 SEC game at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium, kicking off at noon ET on ABC — this despite the Longhorns' 27-24 loss to Oklahoma in the Red River game and a Florida team that beat this same Texas program a year ago. The line has since ticked up to 10.5 points at some books, with a total of 52.5.
Two teams coming off a bad Saturday
Texas walked into the Cotton Bowl as the former No. 1 team in the country and walked out with its first loss, 27-24 to Oklahoma — a game our newsroom covered in full in the Red River recap. Arch Manning threw two interceptions, the Longhorns let repeated chances to seize the game slip away, and the defeat dropped Texas back to No. 7 and cost it control of its own playoff path. Head coach Steve Sarkisian's postgame message, as reported by Burnt Orange Nation, was that the season is not over — but the margin for error very nearly is.
Florida's recent Saturdays have been worse. Under first-year head coach Jon Sumrall, the Gators looked like a wagon early in SEC play, knocking off Auburn 44-39 and then dismantling a then-No. 4 Ole Miss team 52-28. Then came the crash: a blowout loss at Missouri, followed by a 38-19 loss to a South Carolina team that had not won an SEC game since last September. Florida managed 387 yards in that one, ran for just 120 yards on 38 carries, and fell out of the top 25 entirely. Sumrall told reporters this week he is taking a more hands-on role in preparation, calling the trip to Austin a tremendous challenge against a talented, well-coached team — and acknowledging that winning on the road is never easy.
The line, and what it is really saying
The opening number — Texas -9.5, over/under 52.5 at FanDuel — raised eyebrows given how the Longhorns looked in Dallas, and the market has not corrected toward Florida. DraftKings and the Action Network both showed Texas -10.5 during the week, with the Longhorns around -425 on the moneyline and Florida near +330. Books are pricing two things at once: Texas's talent edge at home, and a Florida offense that has stalled for two straight weeks. Bettors who remember last October, however, will note the recent history between these programs — a warning we will get to below.
The matchup that decides it: Baugh vs. the Texas run defense
Everything about Florida's slide traces back to running back Jadan Baugh. After powering the Gators' hot start, Baugh has been contained in the last two losses, failing to reach 100 yards in either and totaling just 72 rushing yards across the two games — his lowest two-game output since October 2024, when he was playing his first significant snaps. When Florida's ground game works, the whole offense breathes; when it does not, the Gators have looked ordinary.
The problem for Florida is that Texas defends the run as well as anyone. The Longhorns are allowing just 2.81 yards per carry this season and have held all but one opponent under 100 rushing yards. Over the last two weeks the numbers have gotten stingier still: 153 total rushing yards allowed on 74 carries, an average of 2.07 yards per attempt. And Texas fans do not need the history lesson on what Baugh can do when he gets loose — his performance against the Longhorns in last year's meeting was a major reason Florida won that game 29-21 to open SEC play, a loss that lingered over Texas's playoff case all season. Saturday is, in a real sense, the rematch of the matchup that wrecked Texas a year ago, with the roles of momentum reversed.
Arch Manning and the shrinking margin
For Texas, the season now runs through a gantlet with no soft spots: after Florida come Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Missouri and LSU. A team with one loss and a win over Ohio State still owns a high ceiling, but a second loss — at home, as a double-digit favorite, to a team that just got doubled up by South Carolina — would do damage that the rest of the schedule might not repair. Manning's two interceptions against Oklahoma fed every lingering question about his consistency, and Florida's defense, whatever its recent results, has the athletes to make a shaky quarterback pay for the same mistakes twice.
Florida's math is simpler and more desperate. At 4-2, unranked and trending the wrong way, the Gators are a long shot for the playoff as it stands. A win in Austin changes that overnight; a third straight loss, especially another lopsided one, turns the rest of Sumrall's first season into an argument about direction rather than destinations. The Gators have scored in bunches when Baugh runs well — this is still an offense averaging 41.7 points per game with 2,843 total yards, 11 passing touchdowns and 19 rushing touchdowns on the season — so the ceiling that produced the Ole Miss blowout has not vanished. It has just gone missing for two weeks at the worst possible time.
What to watch Saturday
Start with the first quarter ground battle: if Texas's front keeps Baugh near that two-yards-per-carry line early, Florida's offense has shown it will stall, and the crowd at DKR will do the rest. Watch Manning's decision-making against pressure, and whether Sarkisian leans on his own run game to shorten the afternoon. And watch the scoreboard effect on two sidelines that both know a loss ends something. Texas is the better team on paper, at home, and favored by double digits for a reason. Florida has already beaten this program once in the last calendar year with exactly the formula it needs on Saturday. One of those two facts is going to give.
