Maiava Masterclass: No. 19 USC Silences Penn State's White Out 31-23 in Happy Valley

Jayden Maiava threw for 301 yards and three touchdowns as No. 19 USC silenced a record 114,419 fans at Beaver Stadium's White Out, beating Penn State 31-23 — the Trojans' first signature road win of the Lincoln Riley era, sealed by a forced fumble in the final minutes.

The short version: No. 19 USC went into one of the most intimidating environments in college football on Saturday night and silenced it. The Trojans beat Penn State 31-23 in front of a record 114,419 fans at Beaver Stadium's White Out, with quarterback Jayden Maiava throwing for 301 yards and three touchdowns and the defense making the two stops that mattered most. USC is 6-1 heading into its off week. Penn State has lost three straight and is still searching for answers in Matt Campbell's first season.

Maiava was the best player in a building built to rattle him

Nearly 107,000 fans dressed in white packed Beaver Stadium to make life miserable for Lincoln Riley's team. It didn't work. Maiava completed 21 of 33 passes for 301 yards and three scores, and he did it in all the moments that used to break USC. He found freshman Trent Mosley for a 19-yard touchdown in the first quarter right after a critical fourth-down conversion, hit Tanook Hines for an 11-yard score early in the second, and delivered the fourth-quarter touchdown pass that proved to be the difference.

Mosley, back from injury, was magnificent: nine catches, 111 yards, and a touchdown. King Miller ran 19 times for 102 yards and a score, giving USC the balance it has lacked in big road games. The Trojans finished with zero turnovers and — in what might be the most important stat of Riley's tenure — only three penalties. The team that committed nine flags for 84 yards against Washington last week played its cleanest game of the year in the loudest building it will visit all season.

That's the version of USC that can survive November. The offense has been explosive all season; the question was always whether it could play disciplined football on the road against a real defense. Saturday night was the answer, and it came with the whole country watching on NBC.

Penn State's best effort still wasn't enough

Give the Nittany Lions this: it was their most energized performance of the season. Rocco Becht found his mojo, hitting 7 of his first 8 passes for 131 yards and a touchdown, finishing with 289 passing yards and a score. Tight end Andrew Rappleyea was his anchor — seven catches, 63 yards, a 13-yard touchdown in the first quarter. Ryan Barker drilled a 48-yard field goal as the half expired to send it to the locker room tied 17-17, and the White Out crowd had every reason to believe.

But the same problems that have haunted Penn State all year showed up when it mattered. The defense couldn't get a stop when it absolutely needed one — Maiava and his receivers kept converting, with Mosley leading the way. And the night's cruelest moment came on the final desperate drive: Becht hit Brett Eskildsen perfectly for a 25-yard gain on the first play, and then USC's Christian Pierce punched the ball out of Eskildsen's hands, with Chasen Johnson falling on it. The first turnover of the game, and it ended Penn State's last chance. The Lions are 3-2, 0-3 in the Big Ten, and have now lost three straight — including a second consecutive White Out defeat to a West Coast team.

The plays that sealed it

Two defensive plays, both in the fourth quarter, are why USC won. First, with Penn State driving inside the USC 45 and momentum building, Luke Wafle got home on third down for a sack that forced a punt — a pass rush that had been invisible all night arriving at exactly the right time. Then, after USC's offense went three-and-out and gave the ball back with 4:08 left, the forced fumble on Eskildsen killed the comeback before it could start. Penn State was out of timeouts by then; Riley had even fooled Matt Campbell into burning his last one earlier. The Lions needed eight points to tie. They never got the chance.

Even the final indignity belonged to the details: Penn State was flagged for a defensive delay-of-game penalty that handed USC a free first down to run out the clock. Three penalties all night for the Trojans. The little things, finally, went USC's way.

What this means for both seasons

For USC, this is the signature road win that has eluded Riley's program. The Trojans were supposed to win — they were 1.5-point favorites — but being supposed to win at Beaver Stadium in a White Out and actually doing it are different things, and USC teams of the recent past have found ways to lose exactly this game. Now 6-1 with an off week ahead, the Trojans need to develop their defensive players to have any chance against the elite teams left on the schedule. They're not in a great place defensively. But they aren't out of the playoff hunt, either, and Lincoln Riley passed a test he was supposed to pass. It's something. For a coach who has spent the season on the hot seat, it's a lot.

For Penn State, the questions get louder. Matt Campbell's first season was supposed to be a reset, but 0-3 in the Big Ten with Michigan coming up is a crisis, not a reset. Becht's resurgence is real — his best passing night of the year — but the defense that was supposed to be the program's backbone got carved up by Maiava when it mattered most. A record crowd showed up for a White Out and watched the Lions lose their third straight. The most inspired performance of the season, and it still ended 31-23. That tells you where Penn State is.
