San Antonio 125, Portland 103 at the Moda Center — Victor Wembanyama scored 29 points in 24 minutes and watched the fourth quarter from the bench, the Spurs hung 45 on Portland in the third, and the hottest streak in the league reached eight.
Victor Wembanyama needed three quarters. The San Antonio Spurs beat the Portland Trail Blazers 125-103 at the Moda Center on Saturday night for their eighth consecutive win, and their best player spent the fourth quarter on the bench with the game already decided. Wembanyama finished with 29 points, seven rebounds and three assists in 24 minutes — on 13 shots. San Antonio led by as many as 35 and never trailed.
A Sluggish Start, Then the Floor Tilted
For a quarter, this looked like a fight. Both teams were on the second night of a back-to-back, both shot poorly early, and Portland — playing its first game against San Antonio since losing to the Spurs in last year's first round of the playoffs — closed the first quarter on a 7-0 run to pull within 22-20.
The second quarter turned on whistles and depth. The teams combined for 41 free-throw attempts in the first half, San Antonio at one point scored 11 straight points from the line, and the Spurs' bench kept the pressure on until a Stephon Castle alley-oop and consecutive Julian Champagnie threes late in the half opened it up. San Antonio went to the break ahead 64-49, with Wembanyama already on 16.
The 45-Point Quarter
The third quarter is where the game ended. San Antonio scored 45 points on 18-of-27 shooting, opened the period with an 11-0 run, and pushed the lead to 30 for the first time this season on a Dylan Harper banker. Wembanyama scored 13 of his 29 in the quarter, including a tip-in and a three in a personal 5-0 run that made it 84-59. By the time the fourth started, it was 109-76, and every Spurs starter sat.
The efficiency is the receipt. Twenty-nine points in 24 minutes on 9-of-13 shooting, 3 of 6 from three and 8 of 9 at the line — according to StatMuse, it is the most points anyone has scored in under 25 minutes this season. Put Wembanyama's line next to Portland's best and the night explains itself: Deni Avdija led the Trail Blazers with 15 points on 5-of-13 shooting in the same 24 minutes. One team's star nearly doubled the other's — in three quarters of work.
Portland's Side of It
Portland was short-handed and it showed. The Blazers played without Ja Morant, Shaedon Sharpe and Robert Williams III, on the second night of their own back-to-back after Friday's loss to the Lakers, and dropped their second straight to fall to 6-3. Scoot Henderson scored 13, Damian Lillard had 12 points and seven assists, and Jrue Holiday added 11 off the bench.
The one Blazers line worth keeping: Yang Hansen posted the first double-double of his career, 12 points and 10 rebounds, in the middle of a game his team had long since lost. On a night Portland would rather forget, the rookie gave its fans one thing to file away.
San Antonio's supporting numbers were balanced as usual — Devin Vassell scored 15, Castle added 14 points, seven rebounds and five assists, Champagnie scored 14 and Harper 13. As a team the Spurs outrebounded Portland 51-38 and made 28 of 30 free throws.
The Streak Goes to Phoenix on Monday
The streak goes to Phoenix on Monday, where San Antonio (8-2) faces the Suns in the second game of this road trip. Portland hosts Oklahoma City on Tuesday and Wednesday. Eight straight wins in, the Spurs are not sneaking up on anybody anymore — least of all with Wembanyama playing like this.
