YouTube Still Runs Podcasting: Edison's Q3 2026 Numbers Show Video Pulling Away

YouTube still runs podcasting, and Edison's Q3 2026 numbers show video pulling away from the field. The latest edition of Edison Podcast Metrics, the quarterly study from Edison Research at SSRS, finds that YouTube remains the platform U.S. weekly podcast consumers say they use most often to listen to or watch podcasts, holding the top spot it first claimed two years ago. The service in second place was named by 17% of weekly consumers, Apple Podcasts ranked third at 9%, and the quarter's most telling line sits further down the table: Netflix, a service with no dedicated podcast product at all, debuted in seventh place at 3%.

Those are “most often” numbers, and the distinction matters. Edison Podcast Metrics surveys U.S. weekly podcast consumers and asks which single platform they use most for podcasts; subscribers receive refreshed platform data every quarter. A service can host enormous total listening and still trail in this ranking, and Edison itself cautions that Netflix's 3% counts only consumers who name it as their primary platform, not everyone who watches a podcast there. Even with that caveat, the shape of the table is the story. The podium is now one video giant, one audio-and-video hybrid, and one legacy audio app holding less than a tenth of the most-often audience.

Two Years of Drift, in One Comparison

Set the new figures against Edison's October 2024 reading and the direction is unmistakable. In 2024, YouTube led at 31%, the second-place service stood at 27% and Apple Podcasts held 15%: a competitive three-way race. By Q3 2026, second place has fallen to 17% and Apple to 9%. Apple has not collapsed in absolute listening terms, but its share of consumers who call it their main podcast home has thinned by six points, and the runner-up's by ten, while YouTube has kept the crown through every quarterly check in between. Edison Research itself summarized the shift this way: “Podcast content on YouTube has dramatically changed the entire ecosystem.” Two years on, the data says the change is still compounding rather than settling.

The mechanics are not mysterious. YouTube is where discovery already happens: search, recommendations and clips surface a conversation to people who were not looking for a podcast, on the television in the living room as readily as on a phone. A weekly consumer who first watches a show on a TV screen tends to name the screen, not the feed. Audio-first platforms built their habit in commutes and earbuds; video-first consumption built its habit at home, in long sessions, with faces attached to voices. Edison's wider 2026 research has tracked the same migration, with weekly audiences increasingly listening at home and a majority of consumers both watching and listening rather than doing only one.

Netflix in Seventh Is the Tell

The debut worth dwelling on is not at the top. Netflix ranking seventh, with 3% of weekly podcast consumers calling it their most-used podcast platform, signals that the category boundary itself is dissolving. Netflix does not market a podcast app; what it has is a catalogue of filmed conversations, comedy specials that play like podcasts and talk formats that audiences treat as podcasts regardless of the label on the door. When 3% of the most committed podcast audience names a general entertainment service as its primary podcast platform, “podcast platform” stops meaning a type of app and starts meaning anywhere a long conversation is watchable.

That has consequences for everyone ranked above and below. For creators, the practical lesson of the Edison table is that a podcast is now a video product with an audio edition, not the reverse. Shows that publish full video, cut clips designed for feeds, and treat the first sixty seconds as a headline are fishing where the discovery current actually runs. Shows that remain audio-only are not doomed, fiction and narrative formats still live happily in earbuds, but they are choosing a smaller front door and should choose it knowingly. For platforms, the lesson is that the podcast tab is no longer the battleground; the home screen is.

What It Means Around Here

Previously's own podcast library, more than 300 shows deep, was built on a simple bet: that people want their favourite shows gathered in one place, playable and followable without an algorithmic middleman deciding what a conversation is worth. The Edison numbers do not contradict that bet, but they sharpen it. If the largest single group of weekly consumers now meets podcasts on a video platform, a library's job is curation and trust: surfacing the episode worth an hour, the back catalogue worth a weekend, the niche show the recommendation engine would never push. Discovery at scale belongs to the giants. Loyalty belongs to whoever respects the listener's time.

There is also a caution in the fine print for anyone tempted to read the table as a death certificate for audio. Most-often share is a measure of primary habit, not of total hours, and podcasting's overall audience keeps setting records even as its centre moves. The medium is not shrinking into video; it is expanding onto screens while keeping its audio core, and the winners so far are the shows fluent in both. Expect the quarterly Edison updates to keep telling the same story with new decimals: video first, audio always, and the definition of a podcast platform stretching a little further each time.
