Playing styles through generations

Each generation has played a noticeably different game.

Each generation has played a noticeably different game. The 16-bit and early 3D years were fast, forgiving and arcade-leaning, with FIFA 98's indoor mode as the extreme case.

The PS2 era chased broadcast presentation, while FIFA 12 reset the feel of defending and contact with the Impact Engine, Tactical Defending and Precision Dribbling — positioning and timing replaced holding a press button. Frostbite-era games layered in physical play and set-piece control, HyperMotion added machine-learned, capture-driven movement, and FC 24's PlayStyles translated Opta data into signature player behaviours. FC 26 formalised the split many players already felt, offering separate Authentic and Competitive presets, and FC 27 pushes defending further toward manual control, with AI team-mates holding shape rather than winning the ball automatically — the latest step in a thirty-year swing between arcade freedom and simulation discipline.
