EA's football line begins with FIFA International Soccer in December 1993, the first game officially licensed by FIFA, sold on the strength of its isometric presentation and national-team football. Annual releases, standalone World Cup editions and growing club licences turned it into football gaming's default through the 2000s, despite sustained rivalry from Konami's Pro Evolution Soccer.
The modern era is defined by three engines — Ignite for FIFA 14's next-gen debut, Frostbite from FIFA 17, and the HyperMotion capture family from FIFA 22 onward. On 10 May 2022 EA and FIFA announced their roughly 30-year partnership would end; FIFA 23 became the last FIFA-branded EA game, and from 2023 the same series, modes and licence portfolio continued as EA SPORTS FC, starting with FC 24.
