Abbott Elementary Is Filming Its 100th Episode at Disneyland

A century of episodes and one very crowded castle: Quinta Brunson’s mockumentary takes its milestone midseason finale to Anaheim this December.

The Short Version

Of all the ways to celebrate 100 episodes of television, Abbott Elementary picked the most on-the-nose one imaginable: it’s going to Disneyland. The Emmy-winning ABC comedy will film its 100th episode inside the Anaheim theme park this month, Deadline reports, with the episode set to air in December as the Season 6 midseason finale. And the cameras are already rolling — cast members were spotted Tuesday posing in front of Sleeping Beauty Castle, in a TikTok video that did exactly what it was supposed to do and sent the fandom into a spiral.

Here’s what we know, what it means, and why the happiest place on Earth is exactly where this show belongs for its biggest milestone yet.

The episodeWhat Deadline reported — and what the cameras caught

According to Deadline, the Disneyland episode will serve as the show’s 100th episode and the midseason finale for the sixth season, airing in December. The trade’s report cites unnamed sources, and ABC and Disney have not publicly detailed the story — plot specifics, guest stars and an exact air date all remain under wraps.

But the sighting filled in plenty. Just Jared reports that Quinta Brunson, Tyler James Williams, Lisa Ann Walter and Chris Perfetti were seen filming on Tuesday, October 6, posing in front of Sleeping Beauty Castle alongside a group of young girls in matching shirts — which reads an awful lot like a school trip to the park. That tracks with the show’s recent habit of taking its teachers and students out of the building: Season 5 sent the staff to a Philadelphia Phillies game and relocated classes to an abandoned mall while the school sat under construction. A Disney park is that idea at its biggest and brightest.

The numberWhy 100 still matters

Here’s the math. Season 5 wrapped on April 22 with 93 episodes on the books — 13 in Season 1, 22 in Season 2, 14 in Season 3, 22 in Season 4, 22 in Season 5 — which makes the seventh episode of Season 6 the series’ 100th. The show’s sixth season runs 22 half-hour episodes, so the Disneyland trip closes out the first stretch of the season before the winter break.

And 100 is not just a round number. For decades it was the benchmark that put a sitcom into the syndication conversation, the line between a show that aired and a show that lived — rerun forever, paying its writers and actors long after the finale. Streaming scrambled that math, and very few broadcast comedies get to triple digits anymore. When ABC renewed Abbott for its sixth season in March, the renewal pushed the show past the century mark that has long served as the industry’s shorthand for “this one worked.” In an era when most comedies are lucky to see a third season, 100 episodes of a network mockumentary about underfunded public-school teachers is nothing short of a miracle with a laugh track.

The creatorThe Brunson of it all

None of this happens without Quinta Brunson, who created the series and stars as second-grade teacher Janine Teagues — the relentlessly optimistic heart of a show that could have been pure cynicism in anyone else’s hands. The core cast around her — Tyler James Williams, Janelle James, Chris Perfetti, Lisa Ann Walter, William Stanford Davis and Sheryl Lee Ralph, with Luke Tennie joining last season — has become one of the great ensembles on television, full stop.

The trophy case backs that up. The show has collected Emmys for Brunson and Ralph, a SAG ensemble award, and this year’s NAACP Image Awards for outstanding comedy series and for Brunson’s lead performance. That’s the kind of hardware that turns a “nice little network comedy” into an institution — and institutions get to film their 100th episode at Disneyland.

The traditionA very ABC rite of passage

There’s nothing subtle about the corporate synergy here, and honestly, that’s part of the charm. ABC and Disneyland share a parent company, and the network has been sending its sitcoms to the parks for over three decades — all the way back to a two-part Full House special in 1993, per Screen Rant. Modern Family made a Disneyland trip the centerpiece of its third season in 2012, built around the park’s 24-hour Leap Day event. As Screen Rant put it, ABC has always been great at this particular brand of corporate synergy.

But there’s a difference between a synergy stunt and a milestone, and Abbott gets to have both at once. The 100th episode isn’t just a fun location shoot — it’s the midseason finale, the episode designed to send viewers into the winter break thinking about these characters. Doing it at Disneyland says the quiet part out loud: this show is a flagship now, and flagships get the castle.

The seasonWhere Season 6 stands

The new season is barely underway. Season 6 premiered Wednesday, October 7, at 8:30 p.m. ET on ABC, with episodes streaming the next day on Hulu — our premiere coverage has the full rundown. The opener, titled “Jungle Classroom,” adjusted the show’s chessboard: Gregory and Ava navigating a new dynamic, Barbara turning to Jacob for help, Janine giving her classroom a makeover, and Melissa working to win hers back.

The season trailer teased bigger swings to come: Gregory taking on assistant principal duties on top of teaching, Melissa serving as the teachers’ union representative. Brunson told Entertainment Weekly the new season is one “for the boys,” with major developments coming for both Gregory and Jacob — and she teased that the Janine-Barbara dynamic, the show’s emotional spine, will resurface “very clearly” this season. With 22 episodes on the runway, there’s room for all of it.

The guessworkWhat the 100th could look like

Let’s be clear about what we don’t know: ABC hasn’t confirmed a single plot detail. But milestone episodes on this show have a pattern — they go big on heart, not just spectacle — and a school trip to Disneyland is a gift-wrapped premise for it. Janine herding a dozen second-graders through the Happiest Place on Earth while Barbara side-eyes the churro prices? Gregory trying to keep his assistant-principal authority intact on Space Mountain? That’s not reporting, that’s wishful thinking — but it’s wishful thinking the show has absolutely earned.

What we do know is the slot: a December midseason finale. Those episodes are built to land — a beat the audience carries into the hiatus, the kind of episode people talk about over the holidays. One hundred episodes in, Abbott Elementary has never missed that kind of moment yet.
