The Short Version
- The matchup: Cleveland Guardians vs. No. 1 seed Tampa Bay Rays, ALCS Game 1 Monday at 8 p.m. ET on TBS, truTV and HBO Max. Tampa hosts Games 1-2 (and 6-7 if needed); Cleveland hosts Games 3-5.
- How we got here: The Guardians came back from 0-2 to beat the White Sox 2-0 in a winner-take-all Game 5 on Saturday — Gavin Williams struck out 12 to tie Cleveland's single-game postseason record, José Ramírez hit a two-run homer, and the team's 21 strikeouts set an all-time MLB nine-inning record. Tampa Bay swept the Yankees in three games and hasn't played since.
- The context: Tampa Bay finished 98-64, went 5-1 against Cleveland in the regular season, and opened as a solid series favorite (around -180 on the pennant, per ScoresAndStats). The Rays are betting that rest beats momentum.
- What's at stake: A trip to the World Series, which starts Friday, October 23 on FOX. The winner gets the survivor of Dodgers-Brewers.
TAMPA, Fla.
The Guardians landed in Tampa with the adrenaline of Saturday night still in their veins and roughly 36 hours to figure out how to pitch to the best team in the American League. This is the cruelest math in sports: the team that survived the greatest ALDS escape in franchise history gets as its reward the one team it couldn't beat all year.
Cleveland's Game 5 was an instant classic. Down 0-2 in the series — both losses at home — the Guardians stormed back to force a winner-take-all Saturday at Progressive Field, and Gavin Williams delivered the start of his life: 12 strikeouts, tying the franchise's single-game postseason record. José Ramírez golfed a two-run homer in the fourth. The bullpen piled on for 21 total strikeouts, an all-time MLB nine-inning record, in a 2-0 win. Our newsroom was there for every pitch.

And now: the Rays.
Tampa Bay finished 98-64, won the AL's No. 1 seed and swept the Yankees out of the Division Series in three games. The Rays haven't played a meaningful game in nearly a week. Their rotation is lined up, their bullpen is fresh, and they get Games 1 and 2 at home. For a team built on pitching depth and relentless 90-feet-at-a-time offense, a week of rest is a gift, not a curse — though the old rest-vs.-rust question will be asked until somebody swings a bat Monday night.
The regular season tells a blunt story: Tampa Bay went 5-1 against Cleveland this year. The market has heard it too — ScoresAndStats observed the Rays priced around -175 to -185 to win the AL pennant, making Tampa Bay the clear favorite with Cleveland needing to win four of seven against a team that handled it all summer.

What decides this series
Three things.
First, Cleveland's rotation order after Game 5. Gavin Williams threw the game of his life Saturday — 12 strikeouts, deep into the game — and that arm now has one day of recovery before a seven-game series against the best lineup in the league. The Guardians' bullpen just threw a historic 21-strikeout game, which means the best relievers in baseball are also the most tired. Tampa Bay, meanwhile, gets to set its pitching exactly the way it wants. In a short series, the team that dictates pitching matchups usually wins, and the Rays hold every card.
Second, whether José Ramírez can carry October alone. The two-run homer Saturday was the entire offense — 2-0 was the final. Against Tampa Bay's staff, Cleveland can't count on another shutout night. The Guardians need traffic, and they need it early, because falling behind the Rays' bullpen is how seasons end.

Third, the moment. This Guardians team just did something genuinely historic: first 0-2 comeback in franchise postseason history, a strikeout record, a franchise legend's homer in the biggest at-bat of the year. Teams that survive Game 5s like that either arrive in the next round exhausted or arrive believing they're invincible. There's no middle ground, and which one shows up Monday at 8 p.m. ET decides the series before it starts.
The other bracket
