PREMIER LEAGUE — MATCHDAY 9

Ayari Silences the Etihad — Brighton Stun City 1–0

Yasin Ayari scored in the 11th minute and Bart Verbruggen saved everything after it. Brighton beat Manchester City 1–0 at the Etihad, handing the Premier League leaders a second straight defeat and climbing within two points of the top.

Eleven minutes. That is all Brighton needed at the Etihad — one set piece, one low finish from Yasin Ayari, and then 84 minutes of the most disciplined suffering the Premier League has seen this season. Manchester City threw 21 shots at Bart Verbruggen's goal and scored none of them. Brighton won 1–0, and the leaders have now lost two in a row.

The goal came from a set piece City never cleared. Maxim De Cuyper delivered, and Ayari met it in the centre of the box with a left-footed finish into the bottom right corner, past Gianluigi Donnarumma, with the stadium clock barely past ten minutes. It was the only goal of the game — and Brighton spent the rest of the afternoon making sure it stayed that way.

City's response was a siege. Enzo Maresca's side held 62 percent of the ball, won eight corners and kept coming in waves: Rayan Cherki bent one into the side netting with Verbruggen beaten, Enzo Fernández put an inch of space to waste, and Erling Haaland — chasing his 10th league goal of the season — was held scoreless for a second straight week. Maresca emptied his bench: Cherki, Nico O'Reilly, Phil Foden, Allan. Nothing changed the scoreline.

Because Verbruggen would not let it. The Brighton goalkeeper made seven saves, the biggest in the 89th minute when he pushed Abdukodir Khusanov's powerful strike onto the upright, then watched O'Reilly's rebound header drift just wide. In the fifth minute of stoppage time he was there again for Jérémy Doku's final effort. Behind him, Brighton's back line stacked up 32 clearances. Lewis Dunk and a defence missing nothing organised the whole performance.

There is a pattern here now, and City know it. Brighton are unbeaten against City in regulation across their last five meetings — and just days ago a much-changed City side needed penalties to escape Brighton in the Carabao Cup after a 2–2 draw. Fabian Hürzeler's team does not fear this fixture, and on Saturday they did not play like visitors at all in the moments that mattered.

The table tightens at the top. City, who opened the season with seven straight league wins, stay on 21 points — now level with Arsenal, who hold a game in hand and can go clear at Liverpool on Sunday. Brighton climb to third on 19 points, two behind the leaders, with a win built on one goal and an entire team's refusal to break.

The take: City's problem is not creating chances — 21 shots is a statement of intent, not a drought. It is that the aura is gone. A year ago, an 11th-minute concession at the Etihad was an inconvenience. On Saturday it was the whole match. Teams arrive believing now, and Brighton believed longest.
